Introduction Robert Tinsley was born. Honest! He really was. Although some people say he was hatched from an egg. He was born in the mining town of Butte, Montana, and raised in Topeka on the Kansas prairies. Somehow he managed to get through the University of Kansas as well as Yale University. He got through both schools. In the back seat of a police car. Wearing handcuffs. He also claims to have been a member of the staff at three newspapers - the Wichita Eagle, the Dallas Morning News and the Washington Post. None of these claims can be independently verified. Today he fancies himself a program director at the International Center for Journalists (ICFJ), a non-profit organization in Washington, D.C., that is dedicated to raising the levels of quality and professionalism in journalism throughout the world. Through his activities at ICFJ, he has come to know the eager young staff at Teenager magazine. What a lucky guy! A season of special occasions. January is a month that some people think of as dark and bleak, cold and bitter. It’s a period of endurance that we must survive in order to arrive in February. And February, well, it offers only more of the same. Let’s not even talk about March. This year, January showed me that it has a warm and inviting face that it hides away for special occasions. After all, isn’t January named for that Roman god with two faces? I think so. Sometimes, January kindles a warm fire on the hearth and invites you to come closer and savor the rare but abundant warmth of an icy season. January 2004 has been that sort of season. A time of rare and precious warmth. A season of special occasions. They’re certainly special to me. This January was the occasion of my first visit to Central Asia. It was also the first opportunity I have ever had to meet the enthusiastic and energetic staff of Teenager in person! This is also an occasion to congratulate the staff of Teenager as they publish their 50th issue. What a coincidence! Here I am, another confused American in Almaty for the first time in his life, but I have arrived in time to celebrate this milestone for Teenager. Maybe that god with two faces turned a kind face my way? All the best to Svetlana Poznyakova and the dedicated members of her staff at Teenager. Enjoy your celebration. Bob Tinsley Время особых возможностей Январь - месяц, о котором многие думают, что он темен, суров, холоден и жесток. Это время, которое надо перенести, пережить, чтобы добраться до Февраля. А в Феврале то же самое, только покруче. И давайте даже не будем упоминать о Марте. В этом году Январь показал мне, что у него может быть теплый и приветливый лик, который он скрывает для особых случаев. В конце концов, разве не Январь был назван по имени двуликого Римского бога? (Двуликий Янус. Прим.ред) Я думаю, так. Иногда Январь растапливает очаг и приглашает вас придвинуться ближе и наслаждаться редким, но обильным теплом ледяного времени. Январь 2004 стал именно таким. Временем редкого и драгоценного тепла. Временем особых возможностей, специально для меня. Этот январь дал мне возможность впервые приехать в Центральную Азию. Возможность, чтобы я впервые лично смог наконец встретиться с полными энтузиазма и энергии журналистами “Тинэйджера”! Это также возможность поздравить “Тинэйджер” с пятидесятым выходом в свет. Что за совпадение! Я, озадаченный американец, здесь, в Алматы, первый раз в жизни, и я прибыл именно в момент отмечания столь важной вехи для Тинэйджера. Быть может, двуликий бог обратил к моему пути добрый лик? Всего наилучшего Светлане Позняковой и членам команды “Тинэйджера”. Наслаждайтесь вашим празднованием.
