Interview: Brent Reiber, Eishockey Schiedsrichter NLA
"Mir fehlen Bodychecks"
Was spielen denn die
Eishockey Volkssport Nummer eins.

Sweden - Czech Republic 4-1
Fight between podium aspirants
In an entertaining game, World Champion Sweden beats podium aspirant the
Czech Republic with 4:1. Everybody who expected Sweden to win easily, was
proved to be wrong, because the Czechs came well into play and worked out
some good chances in front of the goal.
The Swedish Team with head coach Kokocha seemed to be kind of dozy when the
Czech team scored for the first time. A pass by Petr Kozusnik from behind
the goal reached scorer Radim Cepek. Subsequently, Sweden started to build
up pressure and at times settled down in the Czech zone, so that the Czechs
limited their action to counter attacks. In the 11th minute, a first sign
of life from Niklas Jihde, superstar in the Swiss local club Zurcher
Grasshoppers, occurred. After an assist by the second Swiss player in the
Swedish team, Mathias Larsson, Jihde scored backhand. The Czechs stuck to
their tactic and calmly and patiently built up their game. After several
inefficient shots on both sides, Jihde again finished an amazing
combination in a power play situation. The score was now 2:1.
Also in the second third, the Czech players tried to trip up their spanking
adversary. But the Swedish weren't impressed and shot at Tomas Kafka's goal
again and again. Tomas Kafka, by the way, played a strong game. However, he
didn't stand a chance in the 29th minute, when it was once again Niklas
Jihde who put the ball backwards into the goal and hereby achieved a
hat-trick. Afterwards, there were some pretty good shots on both sides;
worth mentioning is Conny Vesterlund's shot on the bar.
At first, the game in the last period started to slow down. The Swedish
team controlled the match and the Czechs kept on fighting, but the lack of
serenity and luck kept them from bringing Sweden in serious danger. In the
54th minute, Czech head coach Skruzny requested a time-out and tried to get
his players to act offensively. Only one minute later, Djurling scored for
Sweden and the game was herewith decided. Andersson's shot bounced back
from keeper Kafka and Djurling only had to shift the ball into the goal.
The Czech national team asserted itself very well and has all reason to be
seen as a podium aspirant. Especially the defence, which had been one of
their weak points in the past, has improved remarkably. The Swedish,
though, have certainly not shown all of their potential. But at least it
was enough for a win without glamour.

Finland - Russia 16-1
Finland never dropped their guard
Team Russia had no chance against co-favourite Finland . They fought
bravely but were swept away in a 1-16 defeat.
Finland started its program in the World Floorball Championships 2004 on
the second day. After the 20-1 victory of the Czech Republic over Germany
and Norway 's 16-1 walk over Austria , another high result was expected
when the Finns dressed up against Russia . The Finns didn't go easy on
themself. They started the game with only two lines which helped the
quality of the game immensely. The two lines consisted of the best what
Finnish floorball currently can present: Kohonen, Ohman, Hintikka, Jarvi
and so on+
In the first minutes, the team of Coach Pasi Tilander showed the Russians
where the match was going to lead. Neimo, Ohman and Hintikka tested the
Russian goalkeeper Pronyakov from good positions. It took nine minutes
until the ball was in the Russian net for the first time. 20-year-old
defender Tatu Vaananen scored the first goal.
An excellent floorball delicacy could be admired after ten minutes. After a
penalty was called against Russian player Drushinskij, the Finns proved
their skills in the first power play situation of the game. Hannes Ohman
from Swedish champion Balrog shot three times on the Russian net, but only
hit the crossbar, the goalkeeper or even missed the net. Still, there were
plenty of other occasions to practice in goal scoring. Two goals within 12
seconds by Hintikka and Ohman followed in the first period to give the
Finns a secure lead.
With six seconds left in the first period, the Russians took advantage of a
mistake in the Finnish defensive play and scored their only goal of the
game. They fought bravely during the whole game. The Finnish stars were
just better and gave their opponents an unsolvable task. The longer the
game was going, the more the Russian's power tank was lacking energy. The
Finns scored nine of their goals in the last period. They managed superbly
to let the Russians run into the trap of their clever play.
Markus Neimo, who scored three goals against Russia , compared the first
game of Finland at this WFC with a practice. It was important for us to
get used to the floor and the atmosphere here in Kloten∙. He's well aware
that the opponents will get better in the forthcoming of the WFC. We tried
our best and in my opinion played very good. We have to keep this attitude.
Switzerland is the main opponent in our group. I'm looking forward to this
game,∙ he said.
Previous to the showdown on Thursday against Switzerland , the team of
Coach Pasi Tilander will meet up with Latvia and Denmark . With the
easiness they were showing in the Russia game, it shouldn't be a problem to
beat outsiders Latvia and Denmark . Both teams will mainly focus on the
defensive part of the game. Tilander's decision to play with only two lines
(as opposed to the Swiss in the game against Latvia ) helped to keep a high
intensity in the game. It will also help to keep the competition high for
places in these two lines. Great players like Janne Tahka or Tero Karppanen
were only sitting on the Finnish bench during the game, which shows the
quality of the Finnish roster.
Interview with Markus Neimo form team Finland
Can you describe the feeling after winning 16-1 in the first game in WFC
2004?
We gave our best and I think we managed to play quite well. Of course,
Russia wasn't that strong. They fought bravely, though. It was a good
opportunity to getting used to the floor and the atmosphere here in Kloten.
Will it be easy to adjust to the level of the better nations?
The teams will get better, that's for sure. We have to stay focused. Today,
we played as good as we could. We have to keep this attitude. It was like a
practice game and we could build up self confidence.
What is needed to adjust to the niveau of the better nations such as Sweden
and Switzerland ?
The teams will get better, that's for sure. We have to stay focused. Today,
we played as well as we could. We have to keep this attitude. It was like a
practice game and we could build up self confidence.
What is your comment on the home team Switzerland ?
I haven't seen them play. But I heard a lot of them. I think they play
pretty well. I'm looking forward to playing against them on Thursday.
Switzerland is the main opponent in our group. This game will be decisive.

Preview Russia - Switzerland, Tuesday, May 18th 2004 7PM, Schluefweg Kloten
Swiss playing a "quarterfinal"
Switzerland and Russia matchup for their respectively third game. Russia,
newly promoted to the A-Division ist still the great unknown in these World
Championships. After the two initial losses in the tournament against
Finnland and Denmark the "Sbornaja" will try not get yet another package
like the 1-16 loss versus Finnland. The Swiss have today the chance to
qualify early for the Semifinals, if they beat Russia, they'll participate
in the round of the best 4.
Expert's vote by Patrick Pons
(Floorball Koniz player Season 2003/4, next year head coach of Koniz)
"I think that the Swiss Team has now found its rhythm, and that the
Russians won't stand a chance in winning this game. The Swiss National
Squad wants to win a medal in this championships, if they want to do so,
they can't possibly lose points to Russia. I believe in a win for the Swiss
side, 9-2."

Preview Latvia - Finland, Tuesday, May 18 th 2004 4PM, Schluefweg Kloten
Latvia - Finland
Losing is forbidden for the Finns
The situation is clear: Finland, together with Switzerland, is competing
for rank one in group 2. Even though Latvia did well against the Swiss,
they have to be considered weaker than Finland. They will finish somewhere
in the second half of group 2.
The memories of Latvia on Finland aren't as good as they could be. In the
last World Floorball Championships they were blown away 0-12 by the Finns.
It has been the only game in a WFC between the two nations so far.
Latvia started the tournament in the opening game against Switzerland with
a 3-4 defeat. After a day with no game, they will face Finland on Tuesday.
The main goal for the Latvians is to adjust as much as possible to the
speed of the top nations. There's no doubt they will take benefit of the
top level floorball of Finland in the following games. Those games against
Denmark and Russia are way more important.
On the other hand, Finland cannot lose to the underdog. They're under
pressure. Even more after the Swiss already have their points against the
Baltic team. It's crucial to finish group 2 on first rank. The winner of
group 2 will supposedly meet up with either Norway or the Czech Republic in
the semi finals, whereas the second of group 2 will presumably have a hard
task against Sweden. Obviously, the Finns prefer to dress up against their
neighbour country not earlier than in the gold medal game on Sunday May 25
th. Besides this situation, it seems clear that the underdog from the
Baltic is not strong enough to beat co-favourite Finland .

Interview: Giovanni Marti, media director WFC 2004
When Switzerland suddenly "paints" a Black picture The new national outfit
of the Swiss floorball national team is a hot topic of conversation since
the opening game against Latvia . Instead of showing up in the usual red
like all other Swiss national teams, the floorballers lined up in black. Is
this just a fashion gig or is there more behind the color scheme? Media
director Giovanni Marti answers the often asked question:
Giovi, the Swiss are playing in black, not red, why?
Our outfitter Adidas wants to launch a new collection for the European
Soccer Championships. The Swiss floorball associaton had the honor of
presenting this new collection for the first time to the public. At this
time though only black and white are available. From June on, all color
combinations will be available.
What was the team's take on the new outfit?
Marti: Most players liked the outfit, we got many positive reactions from
the team.
How many spectators were irritated by the choice of color? Was the change
also planned as a PR-stunt?
This we cannot deny completely, but it isn't the main reason either. We
must be thankful that Adidas has chosen our sport to exhibit their new
collection. This opportunity is not given everyday.
Why was the outfit only presented three days before the WFC?
Marti: The entire action was kept a secret, even we didn't receive the
confirmation - black instead of red - until shortly before the WFC.
What was your first reaction, when you saw the outfit for the first time?
Marti: First I thought, wow, that looks great!" I'm convinced that this is
a courageous step and shows that floorball can be innovative as well and
doesn't only take over elements from other sports. A shame though is only
that the Swiss cross has not found its way onto the outfit. I don't know
why this is the case. But this should not hinder the audience from
encouraging the Swiss team with a powerful "Hopp Schwiiz"!
In the future, will the national floorball team play in black?
Marti: This question is still open at the moment, anything is possible.

Russia - Switzerland 2 - 10
Dull victory for the Swiss
Towards the end of the game national coach Urban Karlsson's allowed himself
the luxury to leave his prided line with the brothers Hofbauer and their
congenial partner Raphael Keller on the bench, the line from Wil had
fulfilled their task of scoring 7 goals, to the satisfaction of the
coaches. Not everything must have pleased the Swedish coach about today's
game though; the Swiss won clearly, but by no means performed as
outstanding as the results would let you suspect.

» Norway - Sweden 4-17
Sweden crashes Norway in a 17:4-victory
In today's Scandinavian duel, Norway and Sweden met in the Saalsporthalle.
Sweden dominated the whole game and won with a high but deserved score of
17:4. The Vikings hardly objected and their thoughts were probably already
circling around the next all-deciding game against the Czechs.

Finland wins again in clear manner
The Finnish national team wins its second game, once again with a double

rival.
» Czech Republic - Austria 7-2
Another chore for the Czech Republic
After the expected defeat against world champion Sweden yesterday, the
Czechs now had to comply with another assignment. Everything else than a
clear victory against last group member Austria would be a big surprise.
» Netherlands - Australia 10-5
Straight-out exchange of blows and tremendous efficiency
In the Saalsporthalle, Holland and Australia fought in an intensive
exchange of blows; statistically, every forth shot found its way into the
net.
» Singapore - Greatbritain 5-7
Great game between two B-Divisionists
Singapore and Great Britain aren't big floorball nations at all. They also
may not have any well known names in their rosters. Nevertheless, the game
between the two B-Division teams was very entertaining. Not on the highest
level, but with a lot of suspense inside.
» Hungary - Italy 6-15

With a clear vicory over Hungary , the Italian team is qualified for the
semifinals of B-Division. The Italians achieved an impressive 2nd period
