Xmas и другие ленивые слова.

Hello dear friends!
Season’s greetings! (Новогодние поздравления!)

Несколько лет назад, когда я переехала в Великобританию, на самой первой работе я была Xmas temp. And I wasn’t alone (и я была не одна). Хотя, когда я только applied for a job (подавала на работу), в графе «position» (должность) значилось «shop associate» (работник магазина). И только немного позже я узнала, что Xmas – это Christmas, а temp – это temporary! То есть я была временным сотрудником магазина на период праздников.
And the more I communicate to (Чем дольше я общаюсь с) носителями языка, the more I notice (тем больше замечаю) сокращённо-упрощённых слов. Даже British exit (выход Великобритании из Евросоюза) стал термином Brexit, который употребляют не только в разговорной речи, но и on national television and in newspapers (на национальном телевидении и газетах). Чего уж говорить о таких словах, как breky (breakfast), caf (cafe), pressie (present), ta (thanks), ну а telly (TV) уже давно в словаре. Одно дело в речи заменять alcoholic drink на booze, а совсем другое fish-and-chips shop на chippy!  

И самое новое сокращение, которое я слышала – это сокращение целой фразы в аббревиатуру. And some of my English-speaking friends don’t know it yet (и некоторые из моих англоговорящих друзей ещё её не знают). There’s still hope (И ещё есть надежда), что она не приживётся.
Итак: FOMO – Fear Of Missing Out. Оставлю FOMO здесь для вашего удивления и изучения, и предлагаю найти интересный и адекватный перевод на русских язык.

Но хотелось бы закончить этот выпуск красивым английским языком.
В Великобритании в понедельник уже отмечают Christmas (Рождество). All presents are wrapped (подарки завёрнуты), cards are signed and posted (открытки подписаны и отправлены), turkey is bought (индейка куплена), Christmas cake приготовлен за несколько недель до Рождества и was fed regularly with rum, brandy or whisky to build the flavour (и его регулярно подпитывали ромом, бренди или виски для улучшения вкусовых качеств)! И 25 декабря at 3pm британцы ждут the Queen’s Christmas Speech (Рождественскую Речь Королевы).

LB: I’ve done a couple of those actually for Barnardos, so they are all wide spread and I’ve sponsored a child in Africa, which I pay 20 pounds a month for, little djembe drum.

JZ: Have you met them?

LB: I haven’t met them, cause he’s in Kaolack in Senegal, Africa.

JZ: Okay.

LB: But obviously we share photos and stories, and I can write him letters and send him colouring and stuff that he can then colour and send it back to me, cause he is only five, so…

JZ: Okay.

LB: But now he’s got running water into his house and again, just the general stuff that we take for granted, that they never have. And it’s twenty pounds a month.

JZ: Yeah, it’s not…

LB: Nothing!

JZ: If you think about it, yeah.

LB: You could go out on a night out and buy four gin and tonics for that.

JZ: There you go.

LB: Which you shouldn’t be having anyway, because, technically, we are nice and healthy. But, do you know what I mean, you wouldn’t miss it. And it’s changing someone’s life and it’s a massive thing.

JZ: Yeah.

LB: And that’s the plan international. But, it’s just little things really, but little things mean a lot.

JZ: They do, don’t they? Yeah. Thank you. So, you mentioned that you came down to Bournemouth, so you are not from Bournemouth.

LB: No, I’m from Reading originally.

JZ: Oh right. Is that where you were born and grew up?

LB: Yep. Born, grew up. Erm… It’s a nice place, it’s quite… it’s a bit of a mini London, so there’s a lot of ethnic cultures there now, which is good, cause obviously, you get a lot of different shops that you wouldn’t normally have, erm, there’s still quite a bit of trouble there.

JZ: Oh.

LB: Yeah, it’s not… It is a lot nicer here. And obviously you got a seaside, so… And then all my family moved down here, so then I just moved down with them.

JZ: Alright.

LB: And now I’ve been here what? Nine? Nine-ten years. And I’ll never move back.

JZ: So, you started your sports career in Bournemouth?

LB: Yeah. I was just working, I left Reading as a manager of Pizza Hut.

JZ: Okay! That’s a big jump!

LB: That’s a big jump. I was still playing football like three times a week as I was eating pizza every day, so… I had to do the football three times a week. And then when I moved down, I literally moved from Reading with 300 pounds, and my clothes on my back. And then two weeks later I had a job at the Pizza Hut down here. Cause obviously I was fully qualified, I didn’t have to do anything, so I just said “Look, I can start tomorrow”. And then from there then I went on to Asda and worked my way up all through the chains and then just found my passion and doing it now.

JZ: Hm, so, what’s the next step? Is there any next step?

LB: Moving the studio, hopefully, as smoothly as possible! Erm, who knows? Who knows?
