A total of 639 ice swimmers from 56 teams participated in the annual International Ice Swimming competition in Harbin on Saturday, dipping into cold water below -20° Celsius.
The competition took place in a 25 metre long (82 feet) pool that was carved out of the frozen Songhua River.
The teams, who were comprised from contestants from Russia, the US and all across China, were categorised by age and gender. They competed in breaststroke and freestyle.
«It's healthy. I'm 73 years old, but I'm swimming every day. I live in Nahodka, where the sea is very salty and very cold. Here it's actually pretty good. We love Harbin,» said an ice-swimmer from Russia.

World Cup winning football player Lukas Podolski opened his own doner kebab shop in Cologne on Saturday, drawing dozens of people and journalists to the opening.
As soon as the doors opened, Podolski sat behind the counter and personally handed over doners to the visitors.
Podolski is said to be an avowed fan of Turkish culinary, after spending two years as a player at Istanbul giants Galatasaray.
The newly opened shop on Chlodwigplatz is the latest of Podolski’s business ventures. Previously he opened the brewery «Zum Prinzen» at the Alter Markt and the ice cream parlour «Ice Cream United.”

A reported 20,000 people gathered in the Bavarian town of Pottenstein on Saturday for the annual Catholic Perpetual Adoration (Ewige Anbetung) celebration.
The ceremony included a procession of lights through the city, with people donning religious garments and holding candles.
The procession was complemented by the lighting of about 1,000 bonfires on the mountains surrounding Pottenstein.
The Pottenstein light display is the largest of its kind in the region, attracting thousands of visitors.

Afghan refugees expressed concern after they were given 30 days to leave Pakistan, speaking at a refugee settlement on the outskirts of Quetta on Saturday.
Around 1.6 million Afghans are set to be affected by the Pakistani authority’s decision.

Head of the Russian Orthodox Church, Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and all Russia, sent his Christmas message out to all Orthodox Christians, from Moscow on Sunday.
Patriarch Kirill remarked that almost everyone failed to recognise God when he came down to Earth, because «he turned out to be completely different» from what they had imagined him to be.
He noted, «They thought of him as a formidable and noble king, but a humble unknown virgin gave birth to him. They thought he would enable resolute social changes, but he taught to love enemies.»
The head of the Russian Orthodox Church emphasised that God has «revealed to the world the key truth» and has given his followers a new life, the main characteristics of which are «love,» «self-sacrifice» and «loyalty.»
However, according to him, «the fortress of these invisible bonds of love has unfortunately weakened. Selfless love not only to God but also to each other is becoming a rarity. While neglecting the divine commandments, people are trying to build their own set of values with no place for true love, self-sacrifice and loyalty. This set of values ruins families, society and state.»
Patriarch Kirill then called on Orthodox Christians to «defeat alienation, fear and enmity» and «let our homes be full of Christmas joy again.»

Orthodox Christians celebrated Christmas Eve in front of the Saint Sava Temple in Belgrade on Saturday, with a traditional oak bonfire, called a «badnjak.»
Several hundred believers attended the ceremony, which was led by Serbian Patriarh Irinej, who blessed the oak bonfire.
In Serbia, Christmas is celebrated on January 7, according to the Julian calendar.
In addition to the Serbian church, Orthodox Christmas is celebrated by the Russian, Georgian, Bulgarian and Macedonian churches, as well as the Greek Orthodox Patriarch of Jerusalem.

The same evening, Coptic Pope Tawadros II led the service at the new Nativity of Christ Cathedral, reportedly the largest in the Middle East. Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi and senior state officials reportedly attended the Mass.
In March, 43 people were killed in bombings on Coptic churches in both Alexandria and Tanta during Palm Sunday and 28 were killed in April in a shootout on a bus travelling to a Coptic Monastery.

Around 3000 of Israeli protesters marched for the sixth consecutive week in Tel Aviv on Saturday, demanding that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu resigns over corruption allegations.
Protesters shouted slogans «Bibi go home!» and «Corporate power, organised crime» while carrying placards denouncing the government.
Protesters faced off with a small group of right-wing demonstrators who took part in a counter demo nearby. They yelled «Shame» and exchanged jibes with pro-government supporters although remaining peaceful under careful watch of police.
One protester stated, «Netanyahu declares his support against other corrupted regimes like in Iran. But here he tried to manipulate and put down all the criticism against him while he is really holding a corrupted government taking the money, resources and even security of Israeli citizens as hostage to his private businesses.»
In the past year, Netanyahu has been questioned in two corruption probes, which he claims to be false accusations from his opponents.
Results of the investigation are expected within the next few weeks. If charged, the Prime Minister would be under pressure to resign or to call new elections.

Foreign ministers of six Arab nations held a meeting in Amman on Saturday to discuss the Arab League's response to the United States' recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.
In his opening remarks, Jordan's Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi said, «Our position as the Arab League is clear — we have rejected and condemned this decision that violated international legitimacy. And, we have said that it will have no legal consequences, and that Arab countries will work to throttle its repercussions.»
Speaking of a response to the US President Donald Trump's decision, Safadi called for all countries to recognise Jerusalem as the capital of Palestine while ensuring that the US decision has «no legal consequences.» He went on to argue that the principle of the two-state solution should be applied adding that it is the only «clear and systematic» way to end the conflict between Israel and Palestine.
«I don't see any other option except committing to the strategic framework of the peace process,» he said.
Apart from Jordan that is presiding over the Arab summit this year, the meeting was attended by foreign ministers of Egypt, Palestine, Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Morocco. The ministers are expected to meet again in the end of January to submit their recommendations to the Arab League Ministerial Council.
