A new altitude world record for a solar-powered electric vehicle achieved with tires from Nokian Tyres
2024-03-27 03:00 info@nokiantyres.com (Nokian Tyres Plc)

Last December, the Swiss Peak Evolution project team set a new altitude world record for electric four-wheeled vehicles at 6,510 meters (21,358 feet). The record was made in Chile at the world’s highest volcano, Ojos del Salado. Nokian Tyres joined the effort by equipping the record-making vehicle with tires made for demanding conditions.

The Peak Evolution project, started by David Proeschel, David Koller, and Patrik Koller, aims to prove the superiority of electric mobility in heavy off-road applications. Last December, the team set out to achieve the world record for the highest altitude reached on an electric vehicle.

Due to Nokian Tyres’ experience of harsh environments and challenging terrain, we were a seamless fit to provide the expedition vehicle with tires: Nokian Tyres Outpost AT for preparatory driving, and Nokian Tyres Hakkapeliitta 44 for the actual mountainside climb.

The Hakkapeliitta 44 excels in grip and durability as it is designed especially for expedition vehicles. Despite the tire’s robust size – over one meter in diameter and 70 kilos per tire – it moves smoothly through deep snow. The tire is designed for hard use in harsh winter conditions, and that is where it feels most at home. That’s why it was perfect for the record vehicle, “Terren”, which was powered by two electric motors and charged by a mobile solar power plant.

“The Nokian Tyres Hakkapeliitta 44 tires did an absolutely fantastic job! We are absolutely convinced that there are no better tires in the world for this kind of terrain,” says the Peak Evolution team.

The record-breaking expedition demonstrated the ever-increasing capabilities of solar-powered electric vehicles, and with the help of Nokian Tyres, the Peak Evolution team showed that safe journeys are possible even in truly extreme conditions.

Located in Santa Cruz de la Zarza, Spain, this 300-hectare facility features 10 test tracks, including a seven-kilometer oval track with 5 wide lanes, enabling demanding tire tests on wet and dry roads throughout the year. The Hakka Ring conducts rigorous tests on summer, all-season, and high-speed rated tires. The high-speed tests on the oval track, reaching speeds of up to 300 km/h, challenge the limits of tire capabilities. The Hakka Ring's exceptional testing capacities have contributed to the development of the new summer and all-season tires – the Nokian Tyres® Powerpoorf 1, Nokian Tyres® Wetproof 1 and Nokian Tyres® Seasonproof 1 - ensuring that Nokian Tyres' products deliver outstanding performance, safety, and durability to drivers across Europe.

"We are proud that our tires have to face the most extensive test conditions – and this is especially true for the Hakka Ring in Spain in the intense summer heat," says M. Dražík. "Under the merciless Spanish sun, our new tires had to undergo the toughest tests.

Through thorough testing and continuous development, Nokian Tyres offers drivers outstanding products, providing exceptional performance, driving comfort, and safety on the roads.

Two new sizes for Nokian Tyres Hakkapeliitta TRI M+S all-season tire improve safety and working efficiency of HHP tractors in winter conditions
2024-02-21 03:00 info@nokiantyres.com (Nokian Tyres Plc)

Confident control of a heavy, powerful tractor on ice and snow calls for extreme grip that only a special kind of tire can provide. Also, the transitions between worksites must feel comfortable on the days when the work gets intense. The Nokian Tyres Hakkapeliitta TRI is a special all-season M+S tire made for confident year-round handling and exceptionally comfortable road transits.

“The winter performance is where Nokian Tyres Hakkapeliitta TRI really stands out with its siped grip pattern”, says Tero Saari, Product Manager at Nokian Heavy Tyres. “With its excellent grip, the tire has no problems even in the most demanding snow removal – but it does not compromise the all-season durability, either.”

Work-proven comfort and productivity

At Nokian Tyres, the product development is focused on one thing – the real-world users doing their daily work. Judging by the feedback, the world’s first all-season contracting tire has many advantages. Hakkapeliitta TRI tire is an investment in both working efficiency and safety.

“The users have reported that the noise level and vibrations have reduced significantly compared to typical lug-patterned tires”, says Tero Saari. “This means they can drive faster and more comfortably, which is good for job ergonomics.”

The siping of the M+S block pattern enables excellent winter grip and shorter braking distances. This has a positive effect on working safety.

“The predictable handling in all conditions translates to better productivity”, Tero Saari says. “When the handling is effective even on slippery surfaces, you get more done in less time.”

Another remarkable advantage is the improved fuel economy. Hakkapeliitta TRI has a very low rolling resistance, which translates to lowered fuel consumption.

Nokian Tyres recognized for actions against climate change: Received a leadership-level score from the CDP
2024-02-13 03:00 info@nokiantyres.com (Nokian Tyres Plc)

Nokian Tyres plc Press Release February 13, 2024, at 12:05 p.m. EET

Nokian Tyres scored an A- from CDP for its actions aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions and mitigating climate change-related risks. The annual CDP Climate Change report is deemed one of the most trusted indicators for performance on corporate climate change mitigation. Scores A and A- represent leadership level. This is the fourth consecutive year that Nokian Tyres has received an A- for its climate work.

CDP is a non-profit organization that runs a global environmental disclosure system for different organizations on environmental transparency and action on environmental questions. CDP scores organizations from D- to A based on the comprehensiveness and transparency of disclosure, awareness and management of environmental risks, and demonstration of best practices associated with environmental leadership.

“For Nokian Tyres, concrete sustainability actions and results are what matters. For example, the greenhouse gas emissions (Scope 1 and Scope 2) from Nokian Tyres' tire production in relation to turnover and production tons were again clearly the lowest of the companies that have tire industry as their main industry in the CDP reports," says Teppo Huovila, Vice President, Quality, Sustainability and Supply Operations Business Development.

In 2023 Nokian Tyres reached a key climate target seven years in advance. One of the company’s science-based greenhouse gas emissions reduction targets was to reduce the tire factories’ direct CO2 emissions by 52% per production ton by 2030 compared to the emissions level in 2015. The target was already achieved in 2023. Nokian Tyres also committed to setting targets to reach science-based net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.

To reduce the emissions from tire production, in 2023 Nokian Tyres started the construction of its new factory in Romania. It will be the first zero CO2 emissions factory in the tire industry. Additionally, Nokian Tyres joined the Polestar 0 project that aims to create a climate-neutral car by 2030. Nokian Tyres contributes to the project by developing climate-neutral premium tires.

Nokian Tyres signs a purchase agreement for recovered carbon black – Aiming to create even more sustainable tires and accelerating circular economy
2024-02-08 03:00 info@nokiantyres.com (Nokian Tyres Plc)

Nokian Tyres plc Press Release February 8, 2024, at 12:10 p.m. EET

Nokian Tyres has made a long-term purchase agreement with a tire recycling joint venture. The agreement will help Nokian Tyres reach one of its key sustainability targets, which is to increase the share of recycled and renewable raw materials in tires to 50 percent by 2030. Nokian Tyres started to use recovered carbon black in a commercial product line in 2022. The long-term purchase agreement with a tire recycling joint venture enables its increased utilization in tires accelerating circularity and sustainability in the tire industry.

The joint venture, formed by e.g. Antin Infrastructure Partners and Scandinavian Enviro Systems, plans to establish end-of-life tires recycling plants across Europe, with a total capacity to recycle up to one million tons of end-of-life tires annually by 2030. The first plant, located in Sweden, is expected to be fully operational by 2025. The deliveries for Nokian Tyres will begin in 2026.

Carbon black is used as a reinforcing filler in tires to enhance their physical properties, such as strength. As virgin carbon blacks are fossil-based, replacing them partly with recovered carbon black decreases the environmental burden of tires’ raw materials. It also accelerates the circular economy of the tire industry, as the recovered carbon black is made with pyrolysis from end-of-life tires.

“The use of recovered carbon black has several sustainability-related benefits. It reduces the use of virgin raw materials and increases the share of recycled ones. The emissions from manufacturing recovered carbon black are over 90 percent lower than those from virgin carbon blacks. On a larger scale, use of recovered carbon black also increases circularity and sustainability in the tire industry,” says Juha Hietalahti, VP, Procurement at Nokian Tyres.

“When introducing new raw materials in tires, one of the most demanding tasks is to find the right balance between raw material selection and tire properties, as the use of recycled or renewable materials must not impair a tire’s safety characteristics. The recovered carbon black that we will receive with this agreement is an important step in creating even more sustainable premium tires that provide safety in all driving conditions,” Hietalahti says.
