Today I'm working on a new version of an existing form, where the original developer had added "hints" in to TextArea elements on the form.

Anybody spot the obvious and massive usability issue with this approach?

Here's an example of one in use:

What if you start writing in it, then move to the next textarea and then come back to this one to make a change. Yep - you lose everything you previously entered. DOH!

Not to mention that you need to validate the field not just for whether it's empty but also for whether it contains just the hint - suggesting the user didn't enter anything at all, even though there's text in there.

I'll be taking the hints out of the fields, but, if I were keeping them, there's a simple way to correct this bug:

Here's a Thanksgiving shout-out to all our readers.

We're celebrating Thankgiving this week in America and the editors and staff of ZATZ wants to wish everyone in the U.S. (as well as all our international readers) a great, big, wet, sloppy, Happy Thanksgiving.

Go ahead and enjoy all that turkey, make sure you snag the leftovers, and be sure to travel safe. Given all the TSA fuss going on at airports, we hope all of you going over the rivers and through the woods via our skyways have a safe and uneventful trip.

We're going to be off next weekend, basking in our fully-stuffed tummies, so there won't be either a new issue or Weekly Update until December 7 -- which is not only the anniversary of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, but the day Azeroth changes forever, never to be the same again.

But hey, with flying mounts in Kalimdor, there's something to be thankful for even in that!

Happy Turkey day. Save some dark meat for me!

Idea:
The ToDo list in Activities currently does not show the comments and entries that are responses to the todo.
 
With wide-screen monitors becoming more the norm than the exception, being able to click on a ToDo title and have the description and comment hierarchy load asynchronously via Ajax in to a different content area would be a great enhancement to ToDo management.
 
Having to navigate away from the ToDo list is very inefficient from a user perspective and also a full page reload is required in each case.
 
Attached are two images, the current implementation, and a proposal for the positioning of the ToDo content.
