Idiomatic expressions. Идиомы.

to set one's heart on (doing) something - implies to long for rather than to intend; to have at all costs

Cases of usage:
   обычность действия, действие, происходящее вообще, а не в момент речи
   повторяющиеся, обычные, постоянные явления, законы природы, научные выводы, факты, наблюдения
   при характеристике способностей человека, его жизни, профессии, привычек, которые относятся к постоянным, а не случайным явлениям
   когда речь идет об эмоциях - любви, уважении, ненависти, презрении - те чувства, которые сопутствуют человеку долгое время или всю жизнь
   в бытовых замечаниях
   для выражения действия, совершающегося в момент речи (вместо Present Continuous) вместе с глаголами, не употребляющимися во временах группы Continuous - с глаголами восприятия, речи, желания, выражающие умственные состояния, движения, to put, to open, to bring, to close, to see, to hear, to recognize, to want, to understand, to love, to like, to hate, to wish, to desire, to feel, to notice, to know, to remember, to forget, to beleive, to seem, to appear, to possess, to contain, to consist
   несложную цепь фактов, происходящих в прошлом - при рассказе
   при наличии наречий - always, usally, constantly, regularly, often, sometimes, seldom, never
   в условных предложениях, после союзов if, when, after, before, as soon as, until
   для выражения будущего действия (вместо Future Indefinite) в обстоятельственных придаточных предложениях времени и условия, которые вводятся союзами: if, when, until, till, unless, provided that, as soon as, as lons as, before
   для выражения будущего действия (вместо Future Indefinite) с глаголами, обозначающими движение: to leave, to start, to sail, to return, to arrive, to go, to come; в этом случае в предложении обычно имеется обстоятельство времени, указывающее на будущее время

Exercise 3. Translate into russian.

He turned to smile at the tabby, but it had gone. Instead he was smiling at a rather severe-looking woman who was wearing square glasses exactly the shape of the markings the cat had had around its eyes. She, too, was wearing a cloak, an emerald one. Her black hair was drawn into a tight bun. She looked distinctly ruffled.
"How did you know it was me?" she asked.
"My dear Professor, I 've never seen a cat sit so stiffly."
"You'd be stiff if you'd been sitting on a brick wall all day," said Professor McGonagall.
"All day? When you could have been celebrating? I must have passed a dozen feasts and parties on my way here."
Professor McGonagall sniffed angrily.
"Oh yes, everyone's celebrating, all right," she said impatiently. "You'd think they'd be a bit more careful, but no — even the Muggles have noticed something's going on. It was on their news." She jerked her head back at the Dursleys' dark living-room window. "I heard it. Flocks of owls... shooting stars.... Well, they're not completely stupid. They were bound to notice something. Shooting stars down in Kent — I'll bet that was Dedalus Diggle. He never had much sense."
"You can't blame them," said Dumbledore gently. "We've had precious little to celebrate for eleven years."
"I know that," said Professor McGonagall irritably. "But that's no reason to lose our heads. People are being downright careless, out on the streets in broad daylight, not even dressed in Muggle clothes, swapping rumors."

Exercise 4. Translate into english.

Она сознавала, что это - вопиющее нарушение протокола. Полагалось еще самое малое семь минут болтать о пустяках'*', прежде чем кто-нибудь возьмет быка за рога, но присутствие Летиции действовало нянюшке** на нервы.
-- Это насчет Эсме Ветровоск*, - сказала кума Бивис***.
-- Ну? - без удивления откликнулась нянюшка.
-- Она, небось, тоже заявится на Испытания?
-- Не припомню, чтоб хоть раз обошлось без нее.
Летиция вздохнула.
-- Я полагаю, вы... не могли бы вы убедить ее... в этом году воздержаться от участия?
Нянюшка оторопела.
-- Убедить? Это как же, топором, что ли? - спросила она.
Гостьи дружно выпрямились на стульях.
-- Понимаешь... - слегка смущаясь, начала кума.
-- Честно говоря, госпожа Ягг**, -- вмешалась Летиция, -- очень трудно уговорить кого-нибудь выступить, когда известно, что будет мисс Ветровоск. Она всегда выигрывает.

Никого похожего на этого человеа еще не видели на Привит Драйв. Он был высоким, худым и очень старым, если судить по серебряному цвету его волос и бороды, которые были так длинны, что их вполне можно было засунуть за ремень на поясе. Он был одет в мантию, пурпурный плащ до самой земли и носил ботинки на высоком каблуке, застегнутые на пряжки. Его ясные светло-голубые глаза искрились под очками в форме полумесяца, а его нос был очень длинным и искривленным, как будто, по крайней мере, дважды был сломан. Звали этого человека Альбус Дамбльдор.

Казалось, Альбус Дамбльдор не вполне представлял себе, что он сейчас прибыл на такую улицу, где все его, начиная с имени и заканчивая ботинками, было нежеланным. Он рылся в своем плаще в поисках какой-то вещи. Но видимо он все-таки понял, что за ним следят, потому что вдруг поднял глаза на кота, который продолжал пристально смотреть на него с другого конца улицы. Он нашел то, что искал, во внутреннем кармане. Кажется, это была серебряная зажигалка. Он щелчком открыл ее, подержал в воздухе и защелкнул. Ближайший уличный фонарь погас с легким хлопком. Он снова щелкнул – следующий фонарь с хлопком погрузился в темноту. Он щелкал Выключателем двенадцать раз, до тех пор, пока на всей улице в качестве единственного источника света не остались две маленькие точки вдалеке, которые оказались глазами кота, следящего за ним. Если бы сейчас кто-то выглянул в окно, даже миссис Дурсли со своими глазами-бусинками, вряд ли они могли бы что-то увидеть из того, что происходило на улице. Дамбльдор незаметно сунул Выключатель обратно внутрь плаща и направился вдоль улицы к номеру четыре, где он сел на стену рядом с котом. Он не смотрел на кота, но через минуту заговорил с ним.
«Странно видеть вас здесь, профессор Макгонагал.»

Exercise 4. Translate into english.

''Evening, Gytha. How are you keeping, in yourself?' said Gammer Beavis.
Nanny took her pipe out of her mouth. 'Fit as a fiddle. Come on in.'
'Ain't this rain dreadful?' said Mother Dismass. Nanny looked at the sky. It was frosty purple. But it was probably raining wherever Mother's mind was at.
'Come along in and dry off, then,' she said kindly.
'May fortunate stars shine on this our meeting,' said Letice. Nanny nodded understandingly. Letice always sounded as though she'd learned her witchcraft out of a not very imaginative book.
'Yeah, right,' she said.
There was some polite conversation while Nanny prepared tea and scones. Then Gammer Beavis, in a tone that clearly indicated that the official part of the visit was beginning, said,
'We're here as the Trials committee, Nanny.'
'Oh? Yes?'
'I expect you'll be entering?'
'Oh, yes. I'll do my little turn.' Nanny glanced at Letice. There was a smile on that face that she wasn't entirely happy with.
'There's a lot of interest this year,' Gammer went on. 'More girls are taking it up lately.'
'To get boys, one feels,' said Letice, and sniffed. Nanny didn't comment. Using witchcraft to get boys seemed a damn good use for it as far as she was concerned. It was, in a way, one of the fundamental uses.
'That's nice,' she said. 'Always looks good, a big turnout. But.'
'I beg your pardon?' said Letice.
'I said "but",' said Nanny, ''cos someone's going to say "but", right? This little chat has got a big "but" coming up. I can tell.'
