DIALOGUE

Marilyn: I am exhausted.1 My new exercise class is so hard.
Richard: Your new exercise class?
Marilyn: Yeah. My new advanced2 exercise class.
Richard: Why advanced?
Marilyn: My instructor thought that the beginner's class was too easy for me.
Richard: [He laughs because she looks so tired.] Too easy for you? [He helps her stand up.]
Marilyn: Don't laugh. In the beginner's class, they give you a chance to rest between exercises.
Richard: So?
Marilyn: The advanced class is nonstop.3
Richard: [He teases4 her.] I lift weights every morning for sixty minutes without stopping. [He shows her his arm muscle.] No problem.5
Marilyn: Listen, Richard, doing aerobics6 for an hour is a lot different than7 lifting weights.
Richard: Yeah. Quite a bit different. I think aerobics is easy. I could8 work out9 in your class with no problem.
Marilyn: You think so?
Richard: Oh, without a doubt.10 When's the next class?
Marilyn: Tomorrow morning at ten o'clock. Try it.
Richard: Tomorrow morning after lifting weights, I'll try aerobics. [He snaps his fingers.]

1exhausted: very tired
2 advanced: more difficult
3 nonstop: without stopping
4 teases: annoys by joking with someone
5 No problem. = It's easy.

9 work out: to exercise
10 without a doubt: sure; of course

Drinking doubles risk of male colon cancer: report

Men who drink alcohol on a regular basis are twice more likely to develop colon cancer than those who do not, a report said on Saturday, citing a study by a Japanese cancer centre.
The research team, led by Kenji Wakai, a senior researcher of the Aichi Cancer Centre, reached the conclusion after studying the lifestyle of about 58,000 men and women, the Kyodo news agency said.
Dr Wakai and his fellow researchers studied the lifestyle of the sample people, who were aged between 40 and 79, over a three-year period to 1990 and conducted follow-ups that lasted seven-and-a-half years on average.
The team found that about 420 of the 58,000 people developed colon cancer during the follow-up period and calculated the case rate of colon cancer among drinkers, non-drinkers and those who were abstaining from drinking.
The team found the rate of developing colon cancer was nearly twice as high among drinking males than non-drinkers.
Kyodo also quoted Dr Wakai as saying giving up alcohol would not reduce the risk immediately as those who abstained from alcohol during the follow-up period had more or less the same propensity of developing colon cancer as those who were drinking.
For women, the study found only those who were abstaining from alcohol had higher risks but the team has yet to find the explanation, the report said.

COMMENTARY

Не могу я понять ее up, off, out.

AE: Они, эти up, off, out, away, on in и другие, меняют смысл либо усугубляют смысл известных глаголов.
Up с глаголами to write, to go, to come, to pop и другими служит для подталкивания собеседника делать то же самое, что и без up, только все намного круче и быстрее.
What’s up!
Выражение «I live it up in Minsk» будет означать, что Вы кутите весь день и в полном отрыве всю ночь.
Please, speak up!
Feel + up = «лапать руками» (девушку), «приставать», «обыскивать кого-либо».
I was felt up as some fuckin crim. -
Sit + up = «просиживать не смыкая глаз»
I’ve been siting up for all the night. -
