Joey Mantia- Learn What I’ve Learned
2008-10-02 19:05 peterdoucet

This is Joey Mantia’s latest entry; Learn What I’ve Learned-

To this end, knowledge is power. Life will provide you with all the knowledge you will ever need, do not shun it away. When all is said and done, the most powerful tool you have is the sole capability to control your thoughts; utilizing it to the best of your ability is most certainly a key to success. Surround yourself with the right people; at the end of the day, you will find that friends and family are far more important than anything money can buy. Finally, when you stumble upon something extraordinary, hold on tight and savor, because, as depressing as it is, nothing at all lasts forever.

This weekends Berlin marathon was a blast for all contendors. The extremely fast, inner city course saw few crashes (I actually didn’t see a single crash, but heard stories of one pro skater falling three times at the starting line (With the assistance of those around him)) and a lot of German skaters putting it up with the who is who of the WIC. The race had a load of breakaways (I started the first one for fun ;) ), but not one succeeded. In the end Joey sprinted out from FAR behind to take on the full Alessi Powerslide team from behind and snatch the win at the line… Now that was amazing to see. Joey was so far behind the RBB television camera men, who were showing the race live on television didn’t even have him in the picture until the last second, where he snatched the win.

But no need to take my opinion. “Many” of the better inline skaters have started skating ice in the past few years. Some have never skated inline again, some have been very active, and good, inline and ice skaters, such as alternating seasons. Some have done very well in both sports; some have done well, but not Olympic, or World Team, level. Like everything, it varies by the individual. Watch them for another couple of years, then we’ll all know to what extent switching back and forth works.

Posted in Marathon, Pictures, Roller Philippe Riopel’s First Season
2008-10-03 05:39 peterdoucet

Speedskating-online has an article about Canadian long track speed skater Philippe Riopel- First season as a senior about to begin for Philippe Riopel.

I got moved from Neal Marshall’s to Marcel Lacroix’s group this year. Last year with Neal I was really focusing on and training for the longer distances, like the 5000m and the 10k, and for the past two years now I made the World Cup team in the 1000m even though I wasn’t training for it, so this year we figured that if I would start focusing on it, I should be able to do even better at it. Also, I don’t think I would like to be part of a sprint group because I feel like I would close all the doors for the other distances that I still enjoy racing, so I think the middle distance group is perfect for me.
