While reminiscing yesterday I uploaded a set of photos of the destruction and re-build of the garage, which became Rockall HQ. You can see all the photos here.

Some of you DIY geeks might like a look. It was also an excuse to test out the Upload button in Picassa, which works well and seamlessly integrates with my existing Google account. Nice 'n easy. Just how I like things to be.

Two years on and I have no regrets in spending 7k on a new office. It was definitely one of my better ideas and worth every penny. Without an out-of-the-house office my productivity would be almost zero. You can't work at home when you have three kids 3 and under. Not a chance.

People often say to me "I bet you need to be really disciplined to work from home" to which I normally say "Not really". I just treat it as much like a normal job as I can. Leave the house as much before 9am as I can and come back in just after 5pm.

If you're wondering how I know it came to 7k or where all the money went then here's the log of the costs I kept:

Window 108
Heater and Lights 150
Lock 160
Skip 145
Skip 145
Sand 101
Blocks 270
Concrete for footings 250
Screwfix - misc 62
Labour 1200
Cement 10 bags of 25
Metal mesh reinforcing 40
B&Q - Misc networking bits 65
Concrete for slab 310
weather strip for door 8
Large lintel and wood 50
Lintels and bricks from Jewsons 128
Plastering 475
Blocks 80
Door 38
Door frame 45
Rendering 760
EPDM (rubber) for roof 341
Wood for roof 480
Midi Skip 75
Screwfix - misc 165
Jewsons - fascia wood etc 157
B&Q - up-n-over frame, fixings etc 37
B&Q - Guttering et misc 94
Laminate flooring 84
Masonry paint 36
Wickes -- Gate and wood 70
SUBTOTAL 6154
Furniture for office 900
TOTAL 7054

My original budget was 5k, but I think that was a little unrealistic. As you can see it soon adds up.

It all leaves me wanting to demolish and rebuild something else. I love a good "project" me.

Recently The Learning Continuum Company (TLCC) released their new Introduction to Domino Designer 8.5 course. The course is offered for free, following IBM's lead of offering Designer for free. You only need register with TLCC to download the course. This is not a demo program, where the first module or two are unlocked, but an entire eight-module course, for free.

What's covered
There are eight modules, or chapters, each with multiple-page sub-chapters. The Preface covers conventions used in the course such as meanings of the different symbols, setting up a bookmark, and accessing information on the TLCC website. Module One poses the question of "What is Lotus Notes and Domino" and includes information on the difference between Notes databases and relational databases. It ends with a simple demonstration showing the differences between a traditional application seen in the Notes client and a browser, then showing the same database displayed using XPages.

Module Two starts by introducing you to creating databases from templates. Then the Designer client is introduced, complete with a roadmap to identify the different frames. Module Three goes into designing forms and includes a handy section detailing information on Field values. From there you go to designing views, get an introduction to XPages, programming in Domino Designer, and deploying applications. The final module covers certifications and courses to help you get ready for the tests, with links to TLCC's website.

My childhood is well documented thanks to my mum who did a great job of photographing it and keeping chronological albums from birth up to about when we were about 16 or more. It's great that I can I go back to my parent's and look through the albums of memories I'd otherwise have forgotten.

While it was my mum that took on this responsibility in our house it's now down to me to take, store and look after these future memories for not only us, but more importantly, for the kids.

It's not that I mind it, in fact I enjoy taking photos, but I do sometimes worry about how best to preserve these memories. Remember a while back I asked if this hard drive sounded broken. It came out of a friend's external hard drive "backup" and he'd given it to me in desperation as it had all his photos and videos of his son from birth to about 3 years of age. I couldn't do anything with it and he later sent it off to a specialist company who couldn't either.

You can imagine how distraught he must have been to lose all those memories. He now uses a ReadNAS box with RAID, as do I, but is this enough? RAID won't help in a fire or a burglary.

While I could make multiple backups both locally and in the "cloud" I don't think you can beat actual physical photos. Not everything is better on a PC. For me, I don't think you can ever beat an actual book where you can turn real pages!

For the past four years on Mother's Day I've made Karen a photo-book which contains a chronological set of photos looking at the year gone by. Here they all are:

IMG_4410

The first is told from Felix's point of view and he goes on to narrate all four of them. The latest is the larger one at the back, in which the last page has all four kids on. Karen finds it hard to keep from crying when she looks through them (as do I) and it's something I want to keep on doing until they're in their late teens.

In lieu of traditional photo albums these books at least give me some peace of mind, that should the worst happen and all photo files are lost, then it's not the end of the world. These books are precious to me and kept well out of reach of the kids who are only allowed to look at them while supervised and with clean fingers.

Look after your photos!

The first three books were printed by Jessops, while this year I tried out Blurb and was very impressed. Although quite expensive (worked out about a pound per page) it's a quality book and the "image wrap" cover is nice and the publishing software easy to use. Blurb deliver world-wide I think. Give them a shot.

Tags: tombstone Domino server
Idea:
A previous employer had the problem that a Domino server could be disconnected from its domain for up to six months and the other domain server's Domino Directory and AdminP replicas would only contain deletion stubs for all documents deleted within the last 90 days (default). Consequently, there is always the possibility that old documents can be added back into the domain even when the old domino server is in a deny access group and desktop replication is used, or just even through other human error....

Guys on the 2nd level became so desperate to ensure that "zombie" documents (old documents resurrected from the grave) wouldn't be added back to current replicas,  they changed each Domino Directory replica's "Remove documents not modified in the last (days)"  setting from the standard 90 to 9999 days in an attempt to keep every deletion stub in the replica's history. The only problem was this produced more than 300000 deletion stubs replicating around and this blew the 64Kb limit on each  Domino Directory replica's UNK table and the "Database cannot allocate space" error occurred on all server consoles and the domain stopped... :- (

Thankfully in 656 the fixup -i option was introduced to increase the size of the UNK table past the 64Kb limit. The UNK table contains entries (pointers) for both current and deleted documents.

So how do you 100% ensure that zombie documents do not come back to life in the Domino Directory and Adminp databases?

In Active Directory it tombstones (turns off) a domain controller after 60/90 days and I would recommend doing the same thing to a Domino server when its Domino Directory and Adminp replicas haven't been modified after 90 days. To resolve would require replacing the old server's replicas with a file copy of the domain's current "names.nsf" and "admin4.nsf" databases or using a nicer GUI method to achieve this.

Idea:
Fix the pain that users get in the following cases:

1) Do not let users delete, move or rename a folder if a mail rule is enabled against it

2) Do not let a user delete a mail rule if it is active.

These are 2 pain points.  There should be a warning message in a dialog box associated with these events

Idea:
Hi.  It would be nice to allow a saved search.  To be specfic, add a save this search button to the advanced search page.  Once pressed, a small box could pop up that would allow the user to name the saved search.  Then the list of saved searches for that user could appear in an area to the right of the advanced search functionality.  A click of a saved search would execute the search and display it in the page.  Also, allow saved searches to be deleted.

Thank you,

Tags: mail upgrade smartupgrade
Idea:
It is a rather "easy" task to upgrade Notes clients to the latest release using SmartUpgrade (among other possible tools). However, upgrading of the users' mail files is another matter. Currently, the Domino Administrator uses the CONVERT task to accomplish this. If there was a Policy or option within SmartUpgrade that after the client has been upgraded, the mail file is converted, it would alleviate a task for the Administrator. Perhaps even flagging the mail file to perform the upgrade at a designated time, to reduce replication/save confilcts and also pausing the Router.

Idea:
Hi,
It would be nice to add the ability to allow companies to specify the profile database that they want people to land on when users select a document author's link on the web interface.  I've thought of a possible way to implement.

Right now your implementaiton has this formula in a computed value on the idea_read subform:

"<a href=\"/" + @WebDbName + "/profile?openform&id=" + @Text(@DocumentUniqueID) + "\">" +  @Name([CN];createdBy) + "</a>"

I suggest it be changed, but first, you'll need to add a field (let's call it:  profileDirectory) on your control panel form.  The person that sets up Idea Jam would enter in this new field a url pattern something like this:

http://my.company.com/profileSearch?notesId=

You will also need to add a column for the profileDirectory field at the end of the vwControlPanel view so that @dblookup or @dbcolumn since there's always only one document in this view?) can be used to grab the value in the profileDirectory field. Then I'd like to see a formula like this in the computed value for all document author links: (psuedo code)

if the field profileDirectory on the control panel document does not have a value then use Idea Jam profiles:

"<a href=\"/" + @WebDbName + "/profile?openform&id=" + @Text(@DocumentUniqueID) + "\">" +  @Name([CN];createdBy) + "</a>"

Otherwise, use the url provided in the profileDirectory field in the control panel, appending a URL valid notes id like this:

http://my.company.com/profileSearch?notesId=Heather+Smith%2FWatson%2FIBM

Executing the link would bring the user to the directly appropriate for that company.

Best regards,
Heather Smith

Tags: save delete reply
Idea:
If you save and delete attachments within a mail message, you have to then close the message saving your changes and then re-open it to reply (I think the same if you reply first then want so delete attachments). Notes knows what you are trying to do, because the message tells you, so why do I need to save at all before replying (deleting)?

This white paper explains how to configure IBM Tivoli Access Manager as a single sign-on (SSO) solution for IBM Lotus Connections 2.5. Though this is an optional configuration, it is recommended in order to provide a more secure environment, especially if users are accessing Lotus Connections from a wide area network (WAN).

You notice that certain LotusScript and Java view functions like GetDocumentByKey and getDocumentByKey now return "The collection has become invalid" when accessing frequently updated views. This is a change from prior releases where your code would wait until the view was up to date and then return the most current information.
You try to copy/paste information from certain web sites into a new memo, but you get an error when attempting to do so.
Many users use the Display - Additional Mail Options when creating a new memo, but for various reasons, this either is not checked by default or becomes unchecked during an upgrade or reconfiguration. Can this setting be programmatically set?
