For the past couple of months I've been patiently waiting for the Eclair (Android 2.1) update for my HTC Hero phone. Even though I have little idea what improvement, if any, to expect. I just like to keep things like that up-to-date.

So, I'd read that - unlike the last firmware update where I downloaded it from the HTC support site - this update would come OTA ("over the air") and my phone's auto-update would tell me when the time was right.

So, I waited and waited. And waited. And waited some more. Then today I decided to get to the bottom of why it seemed everybody else had updated apart from me. After some searching I found a comment in this blog entry which said:

From trial and error what ive worked out so far is that if you have a sim free hero and want the update, set the calendar to 2011 and it will give the update option within a few seconds.

Crazy as it sounds I was desperate enough to give it a shot. Sure enough, within a couple of seconds of pushing the clock forward a year the phone alerted me to the update. WTF.

Within an hour or so I was all up-to-date and am happy to report it was worth the wait. In particular I like the new Twitter app/plugin and the small tweaks to the core apps. Most of all I like that it didn't, in the end, wipe all my data like the last update did, even though it said it would and so I'd hand-written a load of new phone numbers on a scrap of paper. Thumbs up for HTC. They've redeemed themselves.

There's been quite some discussion recently in the Lotus world about Notes and Domino's credentials in the application development space.

It's touched several planes, some about about how our careers develop, and our interests change. It's also looked at how we see the place of Notes and Domino in the marketplace, where it, and we, are going, and how the IT spectra of users and customer companies changes.

We've seen again just how passionate we get about about what we do and the tools we do it with. We've seen less about how to turn that passion into results. Where Notes and Domino are going is a subject that I've been pondering at intervals over the years. I remember discussing this very subject at Lotusphere 2005 with none other than Ray Ozzie, who said he regretted that Notes, with the introduction of LotusScript way back 1996 with Notes 4, had become a professional developers toolset, rather than being something that end-users could make direct use of.

It's an opinion I shared at the time -- even though I too make the bulk of my living, from Notes and Domino application development. It's an opinion I still share with him now.

So has Notes lost its way, or rather, has the Notes community collectively lost its way, and even lost sight of what Notes is best at? I rather think it has, and I'm going to explain why. In this article, I'm going to talk about my history with notes. In later installments, I'll look at Notes itself.

Select All is great for selecting all documents, however the fundamental beauty of categorised Notes views cannot be exploited for multi-document operations (think UI and Agents).  For example, I want to apply a macro to all documents within a category and sub-categories.  Selection is currently a manual process which is helped by using the Shift key to select within a scrolling range, however I believe this is archaic.
