The Marvelous Land of Oztby L. Frank Baum

Chapter 24. The Riches ['rICIz] (богатства) of Content ['kPntqnt] (внутренние)

When the wonderful tidings ['taIdINz] (новости) reached the ears of Queen Jinjur -- how Mombi the Witch had been captured; how she had confessed [kqn'fest] (призналась в) her crime [kraIm] (преступлении) to Glinda; and how the long-lost Princess Ozma had been discovered in no less a personage than the boy Tip -- she wept [wept] (рыдала) real tears of grief [grJf] (горя) and despair [dIs'peq] (отчаяния).

"To think," she moaned [mqund] (жаловалась), "that after having ruled as Queen, and lived in a palace, I must go back to scrubbing ['skrAbIN] (мытью) floors [flLz] (полов) and churning ['CE:nIN] (сбиванию) butter ['bAtq] (масла) again! It is too horrible ['hPrqbl] (ужасно) to think of! I will never consent [kqn'sent] (соглашусь)!"

So when her soldiers, who spent most of their time making fudge [fAG] (помадку) in the palace kitchens ['kICqnz] (кухнях), counseled ['kauns(q)ld] (посоветовали) Jinjur to resist [rI'zIst] (оказать сопротивление), she listened to their foolish ['fHlIS] (глупую) prattle ['prxtl] (болтовню) and sent a sharp defiance [dI'faIqns] (неповиновение) to Glinda the Good and the Princess Ozma. The result [rI'zAlt] was a declaration ["deklq'reIS(q)n] (объявление) of war, and the very next day Glinda marched upon the Emerald City with pennants ['penqnts] (знамёнами) flying and bands [bxndz] (оркестрами) playing, and a forest of shining spears [spIqz] (копий), sparkling brightly ['braItli] (ярко) beneath [bI'ni:T] (под) the sun's rays [reIz] (лучами).

But when it came to the walls this brave [breIv] (храброе) assembly [q'semblI] (зд. войско) made a sudden ['sAdn] (внезапную) halt [hLlt] (остановку); for Jinjur had closed and barred [bRd] (заперла на засов) every gateway, and the walls of the Emerald City were builded ['bIldId] () high and thick [TIk] () with many blocks [blPks] (глыбами) of green marble. Finding her advance [qd'vRns] (продвижение) thus baffled ['bxf(q)ld] (остановлено), Glinda bent her brows [brauz] (нахмурила брови) in deep thought, while the Woggle-Bug said, in his most positive ['pPzqtIv] (уверенным) tone:

"We must lay siege [sJG] (осаду) to the city, and starve [stQ:v] it into submission [sqb'mISqn] (взять их измором). It is the only thing we can do."

"Not so," answered the Scarecrow. "We still have the Gump, and the Gump can still fly"

The Sorceress turned quickly at this speech, and her face now wore a bright smile.

"You are right," she exclaimed, "and certainly have reason to be proud of your brains. Let us go to the Gump at once!"

So they passed through the ranks [rxNks] (ряды) of the army until they came to the place, near the Scarecrow's tent, where the Gump lay. Glinda and Princess Ozma mounted ['mauntId] (сели) first, and sat upon the sofas. Then the Scarecrow and his friends climbed aboard [q'bLd] (на борт), and still there was room for a Captain ['kxptIn] (капитана) and three soldiers, which Glinda considered sufficient [sq'fIS(q)nt] (достаточно) for a guard [gRd] (охраны).

Now, at a word from the Princess, the queer Thing they had called the Gump flopped [flPpt] (расправила) its palm [pRm]-leaf [li:f] wings (крылья из листьев пальмы) and rose into the air, carrying the party of adventurers high above the walls. They hovered ['hAvqd] (пролетели) over the palace, and soon perceived [pq'sJvd] (заметили) Jinjur reclining [rI'klaInIN] (лежавшую) in a hammock ['hxmqk] (гамаке) in the courtyard, where she was comfortably ['kAmftqb(q)li, 'kAmfqt-] (спокойно) reading ['rJdIN] (читала) a novel ['nPvql] (роман) with a green cover ['kAvq] (обложкой) and eating green chocolates ['CPk(q)lqts] (шоколадные конфеты), confident ['kPnfIdqnt] (уверенная) that the walls would protect [prq'tekt] (защитят) her from her enemies ['enImiz] (врагов). Obeying [qu'beIIN] (послушав) a quick [kwIk] (быстрый) command, the Gump alighted [q'laItId] (приземлился) safely ['seIfli] (благополучно) in this very courtyard, and before Jinjur had time to do more than scream [skrJm] (закричать), the Captain ['kxptIn] and three soldiers leaped [lJpt] out (выскочили) and made the former ['fLmq] (бывшую) Queen a prisoner ['prIznq] (пленницей), locking ['lPkIN] (надев) strong chains [CeInz] (цепи) upon both her wrists [rIsts] (запястьях).

That act [xkt] (действие) really ended the war; for the Army of Revolt submitted [sqb'mItId] (сдалась) as soon as they knew Jinjur to be a captive ['kxptIv] (пленной), and the Captain marched in safety ['seIftI] (благополучно) through the streets [strJts] (улицам) and up to the gates of the city, which she threw [TrH] wide open  (открыла настежь). Then the bands [bxndz] (оркестры) played their most stirring ['stE:rIN] (энергичную) music ['mju:zIk] while Glinda's army marched into the city, and heralds ['her(q)ldz] proclaimed [prq'kleImd] (объявили о) the conquest ['kPNkwest] of (победе над) the audacious [L'deISqs ] (смелой) Jinjur and the accession [xk'seSqn] (вступлении) of the beautiful Princess Ozma to the throne of her royal ancestors ['xnsqstqz] (предков).

At once the men of the Emerald City cast off their aprons ['eIprqnz] (сбросили фартуки). And it is said that the women were so tired eating of their husbands' cooking ['kukIN] (стряпню) that they all hailed [heIld] (приветствовали) the conquest ['kPNkwest] (победу) of Jinjur with joy [GOI] (радостью). Certain it is that, rushing ['rASIN] (бросившись) one and all to the kitchens ['kICqnz] (кухни) of their houses, the good wives [waIvz] (жёны) prepared [prI'peqd] (приготовили) so delicious [dI'lISqs] (вкусный) a feast [fi:st] (праздничный обед) for the weary ['weqri] (уставших) men that harmony ['hRmqni] was immediately restored (восстановлена) in every family.

Ozma's first act [xkt] (постановление) was to oblige [q'blaIG] (обязать) the Army of Revolt to return to her every emerald or other gem [Gem] (драгоценный камень) stolen ['stqulqn] (украденный) from the public streets and buildings ['bIldINz] (зданий); and so great was the number ['nAmbq] (количество) of precious stones [stqunz] (камней) picked [pIkt] (снятых) from their settings ['setINz] (оправ) by these vain [veIn] (глупыми) girls, that every one of the royal jewelers ['GHqlqz] (ювелиров) worked steadily ['stedili] (непрерывно) for more than a month to replace [rI'pleIs] (заменить) them in their settings ['setINz] (оправах).

Meanwhile ['mJn'waIl] (тем временем) the Army of Revolt was disbanded [dIs'bxndId] (расформирована) and the girls sent home to their mothers. On promise of good behavior [bI'heIvjq] (поведении) Jinjur was likewise ['laIkwaIz] (также) released [rI'lJst] (отпущена).

Ozma made the loveliest ['lAvliIst] (самой прекрасной) Queen the Emerald City had ever known [nqun] (которую когда-либо знал); and, although she was so young and inexperienced ["InIks'pIqrIqnst] (неопытна), she ruled her people with wisdom ['wIzdqm] (with ~ - мудро) and justice ['GAstIs] (with ~ - справедливо). For Glinda gave her good advice [qd'vaIs] (советы) on all occasions [q'keIZ(q)nz] (случаям); and the WoggleBug, who was appointed [q'pOIntId ] (назначен) to the important [Im'pLtqnt] (важный) post of Public Educator ['edju:keItq] (воспитателя, педагога), was quite helpful ['helpf(q)l] (полезен) to Ozma when her royal duties ['djHtiz] (обязанности) grew perplexing [pq'pleksIN] (становились слишком сложными).

The girl, in her gratitude ['grxtItju:d] (благодарность) to the Gump for its services ['sE:vIsIz] (заслуги), offered ['Pfqd] (предложила) the creature any reward [rI'wLd] (награду) it might name.

"Then," replied the Gump, "please take me to pieces. I did not wish to be brought to life, and I am greatly ashamed [q'SeImd] (стыжусь) of my conglomerate [kqn'glPmqrIt] (составной) personality ["pE:sq'nxlItI] (личности). Once I was a monarch of the forest, as my antlers ['xntlqz] (рога) fully prove; but now, in my present [preznt] (настоящем) upholstered [Ap'hqulstqd] () condition of servitude ['sE:vItju:d] (рабства), I am compelled [kqm'peld] (вынужден) to fly through the air -- my legs being of no use to me whatever. Therefore I beg to be dispersed [dIs'pE:st] (чтобы меня разобрали)."

So Ozma ordered ['Ldqd] (приказала, чтобы) the Gump taken apart [q'pRt] (разобрали на части). The antlered ['xntlqd] (рогатая) head was again hung over the mantle ['mxntl]-piece (каминной полкой) in the hall [hLl] (зале), and the sofas were untied [An'taId] (развязаны) and placed in the reception [rI'sepSqn]  parlors ['pRlqz] (приёмной). The broom [brHm] (метлы) tail resumed its accustomed [q'kAstqmd] (вернулся к) duties ['djHtiz] (обязанностям) in the kitchen ['kICIn] (кухне), and finally, the Scarecrow replaced [rI'pleIst] (вернул на место) all the clotheslines ['klquDzlaInz] (бельевые верёвки) and ropes [rqups] (верёвки, тросы) on the pegs [pegz] (гвозди) from which he had taken them on the eventful [I'vqntf(q)l] (богатый событиями) day when the Thing was constructed [kqn'strAktId] (сконструирована).

You might think that was the end of the Gump; and so it was, as a flyingmachine ['flaIIN-mq'SJn] (летающая машина). But the head over the mantle ['mxntl]-piece (каминной полкой) continued to talk [tLk] (говорить) whenever [wen'evq] (в любой момент когда) it took a notion ['nquS(q)n] () to do so, and it frequently ['frJkwentli] (часто) startled, with its abrupt [q'brApt] (внезаптыми) questions ['kwesCqnz] (вопросами), the people who waited in the hall [hLl] (приёмной) for an audience ['Ldjqns] with the Queen.

The Saw-Horse, being Ozma's personal ['pE:snl] (личной) property ['prPpqtI] (собственностью), was tenderly ['tendqli] (нежно) cared [keqd] (was ~ for - заботились) for; and often she rode the queer creature along the streets of the Emerald City. She had its wooden legs shod [SPd] (подковали) with gold, to keep them from wearing ['weqrIN] out (чтобы они не износились), and the tinkle ['tINkl] (звяканье) of these golden shoes upon the pavement ['peIvmqnt] (мостовой) always filled the Queen's subjects ['sAbGIkts] (подданных) with awe [L] (благоговейным трепетом) as they thought upon this evidence ['evIdqns] (из-за этого) of her magical powers ['pauqz] (способности).

"The Wonderful Wizard was never so wonderful as Queen Ozma," the people said to one another, in whispers ['wIspqz] (шёпотом); "for he claimed [kleImd] (заявлял) to do many things he could not do; whereas [weqr'xz] (тогда как) our new Queen does many things no one would ever expect [Ik'spekt] (ожидал бы) her to accomplish [q'kPmplIS] (совершит)."

Jack Pumpkinhead remained with Ozma to the end of his days; and he did not spoil as soon as he had feared, although he always remained as stupid ['stjHpId] (глупым) as ever. The Woggle-Bug tried to teach him several arts [Rts] (искусству) and sciences ['saIqnsIz] (наукам); but Jack was so poor a student ['stju:dqnt] that any attempt [q'tempt] (попытка) to educate ['edjukeIt] (обучить) him was soon abandoned [q'bxndqnd] (оставлена).

After Glinda's army had marched back home, and peace [pJs] (мир) was restored to the Emerald City, the Tin Woodman announced his intention [In'tenS(q)n] (намерение) to return to his own Kingdom ['kINdqm] (королевство) of the Winkies.

"It isn't a very big Kingdom," said he to Ozma, "but for that very reason it is easier to rule; and I have called myself an Emperor because I am an Absolute ['xbsqlu:t] Monarch, and no one interferes ["Intq'fIqz] (вмешивается) in any way with my conduct ['kPndAkt] (ведение) of public or personal ['pE:snl] (личных) affairs [q'feqz] (дел) . When I get home I shall have a new coat [kqut] (мундир) of nickel plate [pleIt] (листов); for I have become somewhat marred ['mRd] (повреждён) and scratched [skrxCt] (поцарапан) lately ['leItlI] (в последнее время); and then I shall be glad to have you pay me a visit [vIzIt] (нанесёте мне визит)."

"Thank you," replied Ozma. "Some day I may accept [qk'sept] (приму) the invitation ["InvI'teISqn] (приглашение). But what is to become of the Scarecrow?"

"I shall return with my friend the Tin Woodman," said the stuffed one, seriously ['sI(q)riqsli] (серьёзно). "We have decided never to be parted ['pRtId] (никогда не расставаться) in the future ['fjHCq] (будущем)."

"And I have made the Scarecrow my Royal Treasurer ['treZqrq] (казначеем)," explained the Tin Woodman." For it has occurred [q'kE:d] (пришло в голову) to me that it is a good thing to have a Royal Treasurer who is made of money. What do you think?"

"I think," said the little Queen, smiling, "that your friend must be the richest ['rICIst] (самый богатый) man in all the world."

"I am," returned the Scarecrow. "but not on account [q'kaunt] (из-за) of my money. For I consider [kqn'sIdq] (считаю) brains far superior [sH'pI(q)rIq] (намного лучше) to money, in every way. You may have noticed that if one has money without brains, he cannot use it to advantage [qd'vRntIG] (с пользой); but if one has brains without money, they will enable [I'neIbl] (позволят) him to live comfortably ['kAmftqb(q)li, 'kAmfqt-] (спокойно) to the end of his days."

"At the same time," declared the Tin Woodman, "you must acknowledge [qk'nPlIG] (признать) that a good heart is a thing that brains can not create [kri:'eIt] (создать), and that money can not buy [baI] (купить). Perhaps, after all, it is I who am the richest man in all the world."

"You are both rich, my friends," said Ozma, gently ['Gentli] (мягко); "and your riches ['rICIz] (богатства) are the only riches worth [wE:T] (которые стоит) having -- the riches of content ['kPntqnt] (внутренние)!"
