Exercice 1. Read the text and try to understand the meaning of new words.

Sugar, salt, buckwheat and matches are sold at the grocer's. Bread is sold at the baker's. We buy meat at the butcher's. Fruits and vegetables are sold at the greengrocer's. We go to the confectioner's for pies, cakes, pastry and sweets and to the fishmonger's for fish.

When we want to buy clothes we go to the men's or ladie's outfitters. We buy shoes at the shoe shops. Sometimes we go a department store to buy clothes or shoes. A department store is a big shop which has many departments. Salesmen, saleswomen and cashiers work in a shop.

A customer is a person who buys things in a shop. The customers ask the salesman or saleswoman (salesgirl) to show the things they want to buy. They ask him (her) what the price is or how much it is. The salesman or salesgirl answer them and give the bill. at the cash-desk the customers give the bill and the money to the cashier and get a check and their change.
They come up to the salesgirl and give her the check. The salesgirl takes it and wraps up the goods they've bought. If customers buy some food-stuffs, a salesgirl first weighs the thing they've bought on the scales and only afterwards it up and gives it to them.

EMPHASIS in english sentence-structure.

Emphasizes function as expedients to produce emotive and logical intensity of the utterance, expressive nuances of meaning.

Such syntactic structures are subtle and delicate in their different shades of meaning, and it is not always easy to find the ones that express precisely what we want to say.

Compare, further, the following:

And ever did his Soul tempt him with evil, and whisper of terrible things. Yet did it not prevail against him, so great was the power of his love (O. Wilde). (Here the inverted word order is employed to render intense emphasis in a legend-stylized narration.)

One thing and one thing only could she do for him (R. Kipling). (Inversion in this case is used to express emotional intensification of the central idea.)

The above law does hold. (Вышеупомянутый закон действительно справедлив.)

If there is an adverb meaning действительно (for example: actually,  really, indeed) we don't translate do. 

2. patterns with so-called "appended statement", e. g.:

He likes a low death-rate and a gravel soil for himself, he does. (Shaw)

You're the sort that makes duty a pleasure, you are. (Shaw)

3. the use of the verb go functioning as an emphatic auxiliary in idiomatic pattern go and Verb where there is no idea of real motion attached to the verb go.

Verb-phrases of this type imply disapproval of the action, its irrelevance or unexpectedness with different shades of subjective modal force depending on the context, linguistic or situational.

Why do you say such things?     Why do you go and say such things?

Past Indefinite

He did it.                                   He went and did it.

Present Perfect

He has caught it.                       He has gone and caught it.

Past Perfect

Don't go putting on any airs with me. (Mitchell)

Perhaps nowhere have been achieved better results as in this field of science. (Может быть, нигде не были достигнуты лучшие результаты, чем в этой области науки.)

1. a) The white walls show there through the darkness.

    b) I saw him coming out of the hotel.

4. a) Don’t forget me!

5. a) The newly discovered electron provided an entity which was assumed to be a constituent of all atoms, but it also provided a natural unit of electric charge.

    b) This bookmaker is the best.

Exercise 3. Translate into russian.

Mr. Dursley sat frozen in his armchair. Shooting stars all over Britain? Owls flying by daylight? Mysterious people in cloaks all over the place? And a whisper, a whisper about the Potters...
Mrs. Dursley came into the living room carrying two cups of tea. It was no good. He'd have to say something to her. He cleared his throat nervously. "Er — Petunia, dear — you haven't heard from your sister lately, have you?"
As he had expected, Mrs. Dursley looked shocked and angry. After all, they normally pretended she didn't have a sister.
"No," she said sharply. "Why?"
"Funny stuff on the news," Mr. Dursley mumbled. "Owls... shooting stars... and there were a lot of funny-looking people in town today..."
"So?" snapped Mrs. Dursley.
"Well, I just thought... maybe... it was something to do with... you know... her crowd."
Mrs. Dursley sipped her tea through pursed lips. Mr. Dursley wondered whether he dared tell her he'd heard the name "Potter." He decided he didn't dare. Instead he said, as casually as he could, "Their son -- he'd be about Dudley's age now, wouldn't he?"
"I suppose so," said Mrs. Dursley stiffly.<;BR> "What's his name again? Howard, isn't it?"
"Harry. Nasty, common name, if you ask me."
"Oh, yes," said Mr. Dursley, his heart sinking horribly. "Yes, I quite agree."

Exercise 4. Translate into english.

Нянюшка Ягг** вернулась домой и наполняла пивом пинтовую кружку, когда в дверь постучали. Она со вздохом поставила кувшин и пошла открывать.
-- Кого я вижу! Зачем пожаловали? Да в такой холод и поздноту?
И нянюшка попятилась в комнату, отступая перед тремя ведьмами. Все гостьи были в черных плащах и остроконечных шляпах, традиционной ведьмовской спецодежде, однако именно это и позволяло отличить их одну от другой. Ничто так не подчеркивает индивидуальность, как униформа: здесь подвернем, там подколем -- и вот вам мелочи, которые тем заметнее, чем очевиднее единообразие.
Взять, к примеру, куму Бивис***: шляпа у нее была с очень плоскими полями и такой острой верхушкой, что впору уши прочищать. Куму Бивис нянюшка любила. Та хоть и была шибко грамотная (порой ученость из нее так и перла****), зато сама чинила себе башмаки и нюхала табак, а это, по скромному мнению нянюшки Ягг*****, был первый признак Нашего Человека.

The old clock ticked on the mantelpiece and, for some length of time, there was no other sound.
There came a faint rustling. The paper bag on the table moved and then began to crinkle like a deflating balloon. Slowly, the still air filled with a heavy smell of decay.
After a while the first maggot crawled out.
