Anger and Annoyance.


Here are presented a new words on the subject "Anger and Annoyance".
Try to understand this words without vocabulary. For better understanding you have to perform a exercise below.
The right meaning of all words and solution of exercice will be in the next issue.

a blazing  row - an argument  in which people  are  very  angry  and emotional
to  blow  your  top -  to  lose  your temper and become  very angry
to be cross   -  to be a little angry (often used when speaking  to children)
to be crotchety – bad-tempered.
to drive smb up the wall -  to annoy sb
furious  -  very angry
galling - sth  that  is  annoying, because  it seems unfair or wrong
to get on  smb’s nervous - to annoy smb
a heated argument  -  a bad argument in which people are very angry
to hit the roof  -   to  lose your  temper and become very angry
to  be  indignant -   to  be  very  angry
infuriate - make angry
irate - very angry
to irritate -  to annoy
to  be  livid -   to  be  very  angry  (not used before a noun)
to  be in no mood to -   to  be  angry and not want to
an outburst  - a sudden  explosion  of anger
a quick temper  -   if you  have a quick temper ,  you  lose  your  temper quickly  and very easily
to be  sick and tired of sth/sb - to be  annoyed and fed up with sth/sb
to throw a tantrum -  to start kicking, crying  and  shouting  (generally used for children)
to be  touchy -  to  be  bad-tempered and easily made angry
to be  up in arm  about sth -  to  be very  angry  and  ready  to  protest (used to describe group  reaction)

6. Inverted order of words in case of  shifting Participle I or II to the first place
Confirming this possibility is another fact. (Эту возможность подтверждает еще один факт.)
Related to the chemical activity are many other effects. (С химической активностью связаны многие другие эффекты.)
 
7. however + именная часть сказуемого + as, though
В уступительных эмфатических предложениях на первом месте стоит именная часть сказуемого, выраженная прилагательным или причастием с последующими союзами as, though или с предшествующим however.
Hard as it is we must do this work. (Как ни трудно, мы должны сделать эту работу.)
However cold this winter is, the one of 1941 was still colder. (Как ни холодна эта зима, зима 1941 года была еще холоднее.)
 
8. Уступительные придаточные предложения, выражающие дополнительный оттенок возможности, начинаются с местоимения или наречия в сочетании с ever.
Они могут употребляться как с глаголом may (might),так и без него. При переводе этот глагол обычно опускается:
I am right whatever other people may say. (Я прав, что бы ни говорили.)
Whoever else may object, I shall approve. (Кто бы ни возражал, а я (все-таки) буду поддер-живать.)
 
9. Двойное отрицание
Отрицание not в сочетании с отрицательной приставкой прилагательного или наречия усиливает любые члены предложения, кроме подлежащего и дополнения. Такое сочетание перед прилагательным или наречием обычно переводится довольно, весьма, вполне:
The case is not improbable. (Этот случай довольно (весьма, вполне) вероятен)
 
10. it is ... that (which, who)
It is these properties of crystals that are the most important. (Именно эти свойства кристаллов наиболее важны. Наиболее важны эти свойства кристаллов.)
It was not until Reontgen discovered X-rays that scientists began to take interest in this subject. (Только тогда, когда Рентген открыл Х-лучи, ученые начали интересоваться этим вопросом.)

Exercise 3. Translate into russian.

He didn't say another word on the subject as they went upstairs to bed. While Mrs. Dursley was in the bathroom, Mr. Dursley crept to the bedroom window and peered down into the front garden. The cat was still there. It was staring down Privet Drive as though it were waiting for something.
Was he imagining things? Could all this have anything to do with the Potters? If it did... if it got out that they were related to a pair of -- well, he didn't think he could bear it.
The Dursleys got into bed. Mrs. Dursley fell asleep quickly but Mr. Dursley lay awake, turning it all over in his mind. His last, comforting thought before he fell asleep was that even if the Potters were involved, there was no reason for them to come near him and Mrs. Dursley. The Potters knew very well what he and Petunia thought about them and their kind.... He couldn't see how he and Petunia could get mixed up in anything that might be going on — he yawned and turned over -- it couldn't affect them....
How very wrong he was.

Exercise 4. Translate into english.

В одежде матушки Развейли* наблюдался определенный беспорядок, словно сетчатка ее внутреннего ока отслоилась** и старушка жила сразу в нескольких временах. Когда тронется умом обычный человек, добра не жди, но куда страшнее, если упомянутый ум обращен к сверхъестественному. Оставалось надеяться, что матушка Развейли всего лишь путает, куда надевать нижнее белье -- под платье или поверх него.
Увы, матушка Развейли сдавала все сильнее -- ее стук в дверь иногда раздавался за несколько часов до появления самой матушки, а следы на дорожке возникали несколько дней спустя.

Exercise 3. Translate into russian.

Nanny Ogg was back home and just pouring a pint of beer when there was a knock. She put down the jug with a sigh, and went and opened the door.
'Oh, hello, ladies. What're you doing in these parts? And on such a chilly evening, too?'
Nanny backed into the room, ahead of three more witches. They wore the black cloaks and pointy hats traditionally associated with their craft, although this served to make each one look different. There is nothing like a uniform for allowing one to express one's individuality. A tweak here and a tuck there are little details that scream all the louder in the apparent, well, uniformity.
Gammer Beavis's hat, for example, had a very flat brim and a point you could clean your ear with. Nanny liked Gammer Beavis. She might he a bit too educated, so that sometimes it overflowed out of her mouth, but she did her own shoe repairs and took snuff and, in Nanny Ogg's small world view, things like this meant that someone was All Right.
