Yen Declines For a 3rd Week In 4 On Speculation Japan May Sell Currency

Sept. 18 (Bloomberg) -- The yen fell against the dollar for the third week in four on speculation Japan may resume sales of the currency should the economy's recovery slow. The Japanese government last week cut its estimate for second-quarter growth.

Demand for the yen declined after Zembei Mizoguchi, Japan's top currency official until July, told reporters in Tokyo that the country sold record amounts of yen in the first quarter to prevent the currency's strength from jeopardizing a rebound. Some traders interpreted the comments to mean Japan may be ready to sell its currency.

On the week, the Japanese currency fell 0.2 percent to 109.82 yen per dollar from 109.65, according to EBS, an electronic foreign-exchange trading system. The euro fell 0.6 percent to $1.2186 from $1.2262.

The dollar's biggest gain against both currencies this week came after a U.S. Federal Reserve report Sept. 15 showed New York- area manufacturing surged this month. The currency rose 0.35 percent and 0.84 percent against the yen and euro, respectively, after the report boosted expectations the Fed will raise its target interest rate two times before the end of the year -- including at a meeting next week.

The following day, reports showing a pullback in Philadelphia-area manufacturing and smaller-than-expected rise in consumer prices pushed the dollar down from a one-week high against the euro.
