Chapter I. An Unexpected Party (Глава I. Неожиданная вечеринка)

В одно прекрасное утро хоббит вышел раскурить свою трубку, когда к нему подошел Гэндальф и предложил поучаствовать в путешествии. Он отказался, но “случайно” пригласил его на чай на следующий день. На следующий день к нему пришли гномы и Гэндальф. После ужина они все собрались вокруг стола и стали изучать карту и обсуждать план…Бильбо попросил рассказать, с чего все началось.

 “O very well (ну хорошо),” said Thorin. “Long ago in my grandfather Thror’s time (давным давно во времена моего дела Трора) our family was driven out of the far North (нашу семью вытеснили с Дальнего Севера), and came back with all their wealth and their tools to this Mountain on the map (и ей пришлось вернуться со всем своим состоянием и своими инструментами = орудиями труда к этой Горе [что изображена на] на карте). It had been discovered by my far ancestor, Thrain the Old (она была обнаружена моим предком, Трейном Старым: ancestor – предок, прародитель), but now they mined and they tunnelled and they made huger halls and greater workshops (но сейчас они изрыли ее и  они прорыли туннели, сделали огромные холлы и большие мастерские) -and in addition I believe they found a good deal of gold and a great many jewels too (и в добавок, я полагаю, они нашли много золота и много драгоценных камней также). Anyway they grew immensely rich and famous (в любом случае, они баснословно разбогатели и прославились), and my grandfather was King under the Mountain again (и мой дед стал опять Королем под Горой) and treated with great reverence by the mortal men (и [его] глубоко уважали смертные люди), who lived to the South, and were gradually spreading up the Running River as far as the valley overshadowed by the Mountain (которые жили на Юге и постепенно распространились вдоль Бегущей Реки до самой долины под сенью Горы). They built the merry town of Dale there in those days (Они построили веселый=славный город Дейл в те дни). Kings used to send for our smiths, and reward even the least skilful most richly (короли посылали за нашими кузнецами и награждали даже наименее искусных очень щедро). Fathers would beg us to take their sons as apprentices (отцы умоляли нас взять своих сыновей в подмастерья: apprentice – подмастерье, ученик), and pay us handsomely (и платили нам щедро: handsome – щедрый, обильный), especially in food-supplies (особенно съестными припасами), which we never bothered to grow or find for ourselves (что мы никогда не беспокоились о выращивании или о поисках пищи сами). Altogether those were good days for us (В целом это были хорошие дни для нас), and the poorest of us had money to spend and to lend (и беднейшие из нас имели деньги чтобы тратить их и одалживать), and leisure to make beautiful things just for the fun of it (и свободное время чтобы делать красивые вещи просто для удовольствия: leisure – досуг, свободное время), not to speak of the most marvellous and magical toys, the like of which is not to be found in the world now-a-days (не говоря уже о изумительнейших и волшебных игрушках, подобные которым невозможно найти в наши дни). So my grandfather’s halls became full of armour and jewels and carvings and cups, and the toy-market of Dale was the wonder of the North (Итак, холлы = гостиные моего дедушки были заполнены кольчугами и драгоценностями и резными работами и кубками и ярмарка игрушек в Дейле была чудом Севера).
