Preface.

The chief beauty of this book (главная красота этой книги) lies not so much in its literary style (лежит не столько в ее литературном стиле), or in the extent and usefulness of the information it conveys (или размере и полезности информации, которую она преподносит; convey = сообщать, выражать), as in its simple truthfulness (сколько в ее правдивости). Its pages form the record of events that really happened (ее страницы представляют собой запись событий, которые действительно произошли). All that has been done (все, что было сделано) is to colour them (это придание им цвета); and, for this, no extra charge (никакого дополнительного усилия) has been made. George and Harris and Montmorency are not poetic ideals (поэтические идеалы), but things of flesh and blood (но существа из плоти и крови) – especially George, who weights about twelve stone (который весит около 12 стоунов; стоун = 6.34кг). Other works may excel this in depth of thought (другие работы могут превосходить эту в глубине мысли; excel - превывосходить) and knowledge of human nature (и знанием человеческой натуры): other books may rival it in originality and size (другие книги могут соперничать в оригинальности и размере); but, for hopeless and uncurable veracity (безнадежная и неизлечимая правдивость), nothing yet discovered can surpass it (ничто из открытого не может превзойти ее). This, more than all its other charms (более, чем все ее другие очарования), will, it is felt, make the volume precious (сделают книгу ценной) in the eye of the earnest reader (в глазах серьезного читателя); and will lend additional weight (и добавит дополнительного веса) to the lesson that the story teaches (к уроку, которому учит эта история).
