USA: San Francisco Russian consulate building readies to shut following Trump order

Russian Consulate staff prepared to leave the Consulate General in San Francisco, Friday, after the administration of US President Donald Trump ordered its closure, as well as Russian diplomatic consulates and annexes in New York and Washington DC.
The facilities in San Francisco must be closed by Saturday, September 2, along with a chancery annex in Washington DC and a Russian consular annex in New York City according to the executive order. The move comes after Moscow ordered a reduction of US diplomatic staff in Russia in retaliation for additional US sanctions.
Both the US and Russia will now have three consulates in each other's nation.

Twelve citizens from Russia and Kazakhstan arrived in Grozny airport, on Friday, after they were rescued in conflict areas in Iraq, they were greeted by over a hundred relatives and friends.
On board the plane was a resident of Chechnya with three sons, a woman from Tver with her son, a resident of Tyumen with her son and a citizen of Kazakhstan with three children. Middle East and North Africa representative of head of the Chechen Republic Sabsabi Ziyad stated, «We fulfilled our task upon the assignment of the Russian authorities, I believe we fulfilled it with dignity.»
The citizens were welcomed by representatives of the administration and head of the government of Chechnya, as well as Children's Rights Commissioner for the President of the Russian Federation who stated, «The return today marks the beginning of a great work, that should be carried out jointly with all departments and, of course, taking into account the basic experience that the Chechen Republic has.»
She also stated that a single database of Russian children who are taken to hot spots in the Middle East by parents who decided to join the militants will be created in Russia.

Thousands of protesters descended upon Plaza de Mayo, in Buenos Aires, Friday, as part of a mass protest mobilised to pressure the government into releasing the whereabouts of missing human rights activist Santiago Maldonado.
Protesters carried placards demanding Maldonado’s safe return and chanted, «I want Santiago alive.»
Santiago's brothers, Sergio and German, stood before the crowd and demanded to know the whereabouts of their brother.
«We want a serious and impartial investigation. We want to investigate all the personnel of the gendarmerie who acted in the operation on July 31 and August 1. They are responsible and have to account for their performance», Sergio said.
He also called for the resignation of the Argentine Minister of Security Patricia Bullrich stating, «I ask you to step aside and leave the place to someone who is really qualified.»

Colombia: FARC relaunches as political party

Supporters of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) celebrated the relaunching of their group as the civilian political party Common Alternative Revolutionary Force, in Bogota's Bolivar Square, Friday.
FARC supporters hailed the group's relaunch by waving flags spelling the group's name. While FARC has kept its acronym, it has changed its full name to the 'Common Alternative Revolutionary Force' and exchanged its signatory mark of rifles for the design of a red rose.
An honourary concert was performed in the evening, at which FARC leader Rodrigo Londono gave a speech.
FARC kicked off the first congress since the conclusion of the disarmament process following the historic peace accord with the Colombian government last Sunday.
The aim of the congress was to choose a new name for the recently demobilised group and transform it into a political party.
The Colombian government and FARC agreed a peace deal on November 12 in which the rebel group agreed to give up arms and transform itself into a legally recognised political party. The UN has received 7,132 weapons from the rebels.

The resurfacing of violence in Myanmar is being blamed on last week's attack on the country's police force that left 12 officers dead. The Myanmar military claims to be targeting Rohingya militants in response, leading to widespread reports of wide scale killings, arson, looting and rape in Rohingya villages. The number of Rohingya Muslims crossing into Bangladesh since last week's eruption of violence in Rakhine state has reached 40,000, according to UN estimates.

Activist Santiago Maldonado went missing during an indigenous-rights protest a month ago. Many protesters blame his disappearance on the government and the Argentine Minister of Security Patricia Bullrich in particular.

Clashes broke out between protesters and government forces in the city of Srinagar, western Kashmir on Saturday, following prayers for the Muslim festival of Eid.
Protesters chanted pro-freedom slogans, with some waving Pakistani flags as they demanded Kashmir's independence from India. The demonstration soon turned violent, with police using tear gas and rubber pellets to disperse the protest, as the latter pelted them with sticks, stones and bricks.
Clashes were also reported in other towns within the Indian administered area of Kashmir.

Russian Aerospace Forces continue to aid Syrian government troops by launching airstrikes on self-proclaimed Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS, ISIL) targets in Deir ez-Zor on Saturday, according to the Ministry of Defence of Russia, with the aim of liberating the city from IS control.
As a result of the Russian aviation Su-35 airstrikes, two tanks, two ammunition depots and supplies of weapons and fuel were reportedly destroyed.
Also targeted were the weapons of militants who drove armoured vehicles into the area of the settlement of Deir ez-Zor at night and tried to regroup the retreating forces by creating fortified areas on the Syrian troops' route.
