Residents of Long Beach in New York recounted on Friday how they had woken up to find their streets, homes and cars blanketed with snow after a severe snowstorm pounded the region with record-high tides the night before.
A plow-truck driver, Kevin, spent the day cleaning out the city streets after the storm brought more than a foot (30 cm) of snow. «The snow was really bad. The snow along with the wind,» said Kevin, adding that strong wind gusts made his truck «sway».
Local resident Lona Warner, however, didn't care much for the snow saying that «it is cold that is crazy.»
«Miserable,» Warner then said about her dog. «She wants to play, there is nowhere to play.»
A 'bomb cyclone' occurs when a system goes through a significant, rapid drop in atmospheric pressure. The entire East Coast is bracing itself for hurricane-force gales and sub-zero temperatures as the storm is moving across the region.

The Christian Social Union’s Bundestag chairman Alexander Dobrindt expressed the 'greatest interest' in forming a coalition with the Social Democratic Party (SPD) after the annual winter retreat in Bavaria’s Kloster Seeon monastery on Saturday.
However, he stated “if a grand coalition does not have a chance to reconcile in the future weeks, then we will be on the way to new elections in the short term.»
The grand coalition talks are due to begin in Berlin on Sunday, after Chancellor Angela Merkel has so far has been unable to persuade the SPD to enter into grand coalition.
Germany has been struggling to form the new government since parliamentary elections on September 24.
Dobrindt also answered questions after the party meeting stressing that crucial attention is being paid to negotiating the migrant issue.

Around 500 protesters gathered outside the US Embassy in London on Saturday, to protest against US President Donald Trump's declaration of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.
The protesters mainly came from the Midlands, and held placards affirming that «Jerusalem is the capital of Palestine.»
One protester likened Israeli's actions in the West Bank to those of «a group of armed robbers.»
The protest comes in a long series of demonstrations across the world since Trump's recognition on December 6.
The status of the Holy City is a contentious issue in the Middle East peace process, as Israelis have always claimed Jerusalem as their capital while Palestinians demand that annexed East Jerusalem becomes the capital of a future Palestinian state.

Turkey: Izmir Orthodox community takes part in Epiphany dive

A cross-throwing ceremony was held by Izmir's Greek Orthodox community as part of the celebration of Epiphany in the Turkish city on Saturday.
An Orthodox cleric threw a cross into Izmir's waters, with believers following suit in a bid to capture it first. The winner was later awarded the cross.
This is the second time Izmir hosted official Epiphany celebrations.
Last year Greek Orthodox believers were granted official permission to hold the Epiphany ceremony at the port of Izmir for the first time since 1922, though an unofficial celebration has occurred annually in the city since 2006.
The Orthodox community of Izmir boasts around 7,500 people.
The majority of Orthodox churches use the Julian calendar, which runs 13 days behind than the Gregorian calendar.
Other countries such as Ukraine, Russia, Georgia, and Armenia also celebrate Christmas in January.
Germany: Hundreds of Perpetual Adoration bonfires illuminate Bavaria

A reported 20,000 people gathered in the Bavarian town of Pottenstein on Saturday for the annual Catholic Perpetual Adoration (Ewige Anbetung) celebration.
The ceremony included a procession of lights through the city, with people donning religious garments and holding candles.
The procession was complemented by the lighting of about 1,000 bonfires on the mountains surrounding Pottenstein.
The Pottenstein light display is the largest of its kind in the region, attracting thousands of visitors.

Afghan refugees expressed concern after they were given 30 days to leave Pakistan, speaking at a refugee settlement on the outskirts of Quetta on Saturday.
Around 1.6 million Afghans are set to be affected by the Pakistani authority’s decision.

Head of the Russian Orthodox Church, Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and all Russia, sent his Christmas message out to all Orthodox Christians, from Moscow on Sunday.
Patriarch Kirill remarked that almost everyone failed to recognise God when he came down to Earth, because «he turned out to be completely different» from what they had imagined him to be.
He noted, «They thought of him as a formidable and noble king, but a humble unknown virgin gave birth to him. They thought he would enable resolute social changes, but he taught to love enemies.»
The head of the Russian Orthodox Church emphasised that God has «revealed to the world the key truth» and has given his followers a new life, the main characteristics of which are «love,» «self-sacrifice» and «loyalty.»
However, according to him, «the fortress of these invisible bonds of love has unfortunately weakened. Selfless love not only to God but also to each other is becoming a rarity. While neglecting the divine commandments, people are trying to build their own set of values with no place for true love, self-sacrifice and loyalty. This set of values ruins families, society and state.»
Patriarch Kirill then called on Orthodox Christians to «defeat alienation, fear and enmity» and «let our homes be full of Christmas joy again.»
Serbia: Bonfires lit as Orthodox Christmas celebrated in Belgrade

Orthodox Christians celebrated Christmas Eve in front of the Saint Sava Temple in Belgrade on Saturday, with a traditional oak bonfire, called a «badnjak.»
Several hundred believers attended the ceremony, which was led by Serbian Patriarh Irinej, who blessed the oak bonfire.
In Serbia, Christmas is celebrated on January 7, according to the Julian calendar.
In addition to the Serbian church, Orthodox Christmas is celebrated by the Russian, Georgian, Bulgarian and Macedonian churches, as well as the Greek Orthodox Patriarch of Jerusalem.
Spain: Coutinho lands in Barcelona ahead of €160 million move

Brazilian footballer Philippe Coutinho arrived in Barcelona on Saturday evening, to officialise his £142 million (€160 million, $192 million) transfer from Liverpool FC to FC Barcelona.
Dozens of fans and reporters gathered outside the arrivals gate waiting for Coutinho, who dodged the crowd by leaving the premise from an alternative exit.
Coutinho's fee would make him the third most expensive football player in history.
