As many as 2,000 Spanish national police officers and hundreds of local police forces have been deployed to downtown Madrid as the Spanish capital braces for the Copa Libertadores final on Sunday.
Paseo de la Castellana, one of the biggest streets in Madrid that leads to the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium will be closed to traffic for the whole day.
Boca Juniors and River Plate fans are gearing up for the final showdown, with some lamenting the violent events which led to the teams’ home city Buenos Aires missing out on hosting the grand final.
«Regrettably we gave a bad image to people who were watching from overseas,» said a River Plate fan.
«We are like this, sometimes we Argentinians make mistakes and do not learn from it,» a Boca fan stated.
Most, nonetheless, expressed hope for a fitting spectacle without violent incidents.
The Copa Libertadores Final will be played this evening at Real Madrid's stadium for security reasons after fan violence marred the second leg in Buenos Aires two weeks ago when River Plate fans attacked the Boca Juniors bus, injuring two players.
The first lef ended in a 2-2 draw.
