[JFWRus] Re: JAWS 6.0, Connect 2.0 in Russian

Hello Lev,

Here are the instructions to set up JAWS with Russian.

Configuring JAWS for a language with a non-Latin alphabet requires several
steps. In the following example, Russian is used.

1. Install the appropriate language support in Windows. For details, see
your Microsoft Windows documentation.

2. Install the appropriate speech synthesizer for the language in question.
For Russian (Cyrillic), you can use L&H Speech Connection V4, downloadable
from ftp://ftp.freedomscientific.com/users/hj/private/WebFiles/lhttsrur.exe.

This synthesizer is available for free. After your system has been
configured, you can purchase a higher-quality speech from a 3rd-party vendor

if desired.
Note: because this is a SAPI4 synthesizer, make sure that Microsoft SAPI4
support is installed on your system.

3. Configure JAWS for this synthesizer. In our Russian example, if you are
using JAWS 5.00.844 or later, go to JAWS, Language, Change Synthesizer, SAPI

4 Detect... and press Enter. In the list that appears, select L&H Speech
Connection V4 and press Enter again. Your new synthesizer will be added to
JAWS. You can switch to this synthesizer by using regular JAWS commands. You

can modify the voice settings to your liking.

If you use a version of JAWS earlier than 5.00.844, you will need to add the

synthesizer manually. Open JFW.ini in your JAWS folder and add the following

lines to the [Synthesizers] section:

SynthXName=L&H Speech Connection V4
SynthXLongName=L&H Speech Connection V4
SynthXDriver=mssapi

Where X is the next available ordinal number for the synthesizer.

Save the file, then close and restart JAWS. You should be able to select
your new synthesizer as expected.

4. You can also add Braille support. You can download the Russian Braille
table from
ftp://ftp.freedomscientific.com/users/hj/private/WebFiles/rusbrltbl.zip.

Unzip this file into your JAWS folder. Then, go to JAWS window, Options,
Braille..., and select the Rus1251 Braille table.

Note: to read Russian in a DOS Window, select the Rus866 Braille table.

5. Change your computer's default code page to the value appropriate for the

desired language. For Russian, this is Cyrillic 1251. This is required for
most computers outside Russian-speaking countries. To determine if you
actually need this step, switch to your L&H synthesizer and attempt to read
text in Russian. If you hear Russian as expected, then no further action is
needed. However, if you hear question marks instead of Russian characters,
then you need to do the following.

Warning: The procedures described below are not recommended if you also
access documents in languages such as German, Spanish, French or Italian.
Modifying the system's default code page to a non-Latin setting will result
in problems rendering diacritic characters in these languages with JAWS.

The procedure for modifying the computer's default code page depends on the
operating system. Here are the instructions.

5.1. Windows XP Home and Professional
Log in as an administrator. Go to Start Menu, Settings, Control Panel,
Regional and Language Options, Advanced page. The top combo box on this page

allows you to select a language to match the language version of the
non-Unicode programs you want to use. Choose Russian in this combo box, then

press OK. You should accept any subsequent confirmation requests that may
appear. Your system will be restarted, and the new setting will take effect.

JAWS should now work correctly with Russian.

Note: If Russian does not appear in the available languages list, then the
Russian support has not been installed correctly. To resolve this problem,
refer to your Windows documentation for troubleshooting this problem.

5.2. Windows 2000

Log in as an administrator. Go to Start Menu, Settings, Control Panel,
Regional Options, General page, and press the Set Default... button. The
System Locale dialog will open. The top combo box in this dialog allows you
to select the default system locale.

To solve this problem,
refer to your Windows documentation for troubleshooting this problem.

5.3. Windows 95, 98 and Millennium

Before making any changes, be sure to back up the Registry.

In these operating systems, the best (and the only supported) way to set the

default code page is by selecting the locale during the original operating
system installation.
There is no interface setting to allow changing this after Windows has been
installed. Even though this can be accomplished by editing the Registry, use

this technique only on English-language versions of Windows. Attempting to
do this on non-English Windows versions will produce adverse effects.

The steps to modify the Registry are as follows:

1. Run regedit.
2. Choose Edit/Find and type cp_1251.nls in the edit box.
3. Press Enter.

The Search function will start. It may take a few minutes because the
registry file is long and normaly cp_1251.nls string occurs only once in it.

When the search is finished, the PC cursor will be located on the 1251
entry. So now You are in the code pages list.

4. Press the End key to go to the end of list. Now PC cursor is located on
oemcp (oem code page) entry. By modifying its value, you can change the DOS
code page (required if you wish to view Russian documents correctly in a DOS

window). To do so, press Enter on oemcp and type 866 if you want the Russian

DOS code page. Press Enter.

5. To change the Windows code page, press the UP ARROW key when you are on
oemcp entry. Now you are on the acp (ansi code page) entry. You can modify
it by pressing Enter and typing the number of the code page You want. For
Cyrillic, type 1251. Press Enter.
6. Restart the computer for these changes to take effect.

Note: Modifications described in this document allow you to work with text
in non-Latin languages under the English version of Windows. For optimal
performance under a non-English operating system, as well as for JAWS user
interface in a language other than English, please contact the Freedom
Scientific distributor in the appropriate country for a fully localized JAWS

version.

Please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions you may have
regarding JAWS in Russian.

Sincerely,

Oleg Shevkun

[JFWRus] Вопросы по сокраменту

Здравствуйте уважаемые участники рассылки!
У меня на компе стоит Win XP в которой встроен английский движок
Mickrosoft Sem.
