A reader sent in the following question. Normally, we make sure to publish our readers' names, but as you can tell by reading how she wrote the question, this week it seemed more advisable to keep her identity secret:

I noticed you've started answering reader questions and I was hoping you'd help with one of my mysteries.
My boss insisted we install Alloy and then later insisted we uninstall it. While that's a mystery in its own right, the real problem I'm having is with the email templates.
Once you uninstall Alloy, I'm still getting Alloy templates and its screwing things up. And, of course, my pointy-hair is on my case to fix it, even though he's the one who caused the problem.

For those of you who aren't familiar with it, Alloy is an IBM and SAP product that allows you to integrate SAP business processes with Lotus Notes and Domino. Cool stuff.

But what our reader asks (we'll call her Joy) is how to undo the Alloy installation. When she originally installed Alloy, she replaced users' master mail templates design inheritance with one provided by Alloy, usually one that pulls Alloy elements from NDERPmail.ntf.

To fix the problem, she's got to replace the Alloy template with the original version from Notes or Domino. I'd recommend going back to mail8.ntf.

Doing so is pretty straightforward. In the Database Design section of the mail application's properties, find the Inheritence section. Change the template name field to point to mail8.ntf.

Choose Replace Design and you should be good to go.

Oh, and make sure you type or choose the .ntf file. I mistakenly typed .nft and it took me an hour on a Sunday afternoon that I could have devoted to watching MacGyver reruns to figure out what had gone wrong.

Life is pretty challenging chez Howlett at times, what with a little girl just turned 1 and a boy about to turn 3. So, you can imagine my reaction when Karen told me to sit down as she "had something to tell me". The news she was pregnant gave me as much a sense of fear as it did elation.

We always knew we'd have another. Just not quite as close together!

It's finally sinking in now (she told me about 2 months ago) although, really, I'm trying not to think about it. Which won't wash as it's due mid-February and I need to prepare myself for the changes it will bring about.

Not that I have anything to do before its arrival. Unlike the other two where I had to move my bedroom-office and then build a new one in the garage.

All I need to do is earn enough money to buy a new car. We'll be needing a seven-seater now. Not to mention needing to earn the money to cover yet more maternity leave for Karen. She'd only been back at work for two weeks when she found out!

One of the biggest challenges though is going to be agreeing on names. Karen is really keen on Casper, but I'm not so sure. Felix the cat, Minnie the mouse and Casper the ghost!?

Talking of Minnie Mouse:

IMG_3269

Beg your pardon, that's Felix. Now there's a photo he'll hate me for posting on the internet in years to come. Muhahaha.

Here's the real mooshka, who just gets cuter by the day:

But, yeah, there you go. Third baby Howlett on its way!

Not long back Karen said something to the effect of:

If you let me call the new baby Casper you can buy yourself anything you like up to five thousand pounds! You could get yourself a new laptop!!

Karen really wants the name Casper. I'm not so sure, so I told her I didn't really need a new laptop and she dropped the case (for the time being anyway). Either way, I don't know where she thinks all the spare money was going to come from. Women!

Although I don't really need a new laptop - the one I have works - it did get me thinking. I've always liked to future-proof myself and remain at least on the cutting-edge, if not only slightly trailing it. Right now I feel like the cutting edge is somewhat out of view.

Turns out it's four years since I bought my last laptop, which, in dog years, makes it positively middle-aged. Although I did buy a "new" one off eBay a year ago after dropping it, but that doesn't count as it was like-for-like.

The laptop is starting to show signs of age. The measly 38GB HDD ran out of space the other week and it can often crawl to a halt, despite the 2GB of RAM.

So, I've caved in and ordered a new Lenovo T400. In order to future-proof myself I went for 8GB of RAM and 64bit Windows. By the time it arrives I hope to be able to upgrade straight to Windows 7 (64bit) and add Notes 8.5(.1 by then?).

Not having Notes 8.5 on anything other than a virtual machine I rarely boot isn't helping me learn XPages!

When it will arrive is anybody's guess. Lenovo seem to have taken leaves straight out of IBM's book and their Order Status page is reassuringly unhelpful. Right now the status is "Released", which sounds a lot more promising that it probably is... will keep you updated.

Since starting to use my mobile to check my mail (via POP3) I found myself paranoid about the fact I'm sending my login details in plain text for all the world to see (be it on 3G networks or mine or other wireless networks).

So I decided to do something about it and asked Prominic.NET to open port 995 and I then I told the mail app on my Android phone to use SSL. All was well and I feel much better about checking mail while out and about.

Then I decided to do the same for Thunderbird. Here I was able to enable SSL, but then had the option to use "secure authentication".

ScreenShot004

Seeming like a no-brainer I ticked it, only to be told it wasn't supported the next time I tried to check my mail. Leaving it unticked (as shown) works.

So, the question is, am I secured or not?

It's the authentication part of the process I want to be secured. It's my password I want encrypted, not so much the email content.

There is no standard way to integrate.

As of now we can write web services to integrate with flex, but its very slow.

So there should be a tool which integrates flex and lotus domino to develop the lotus applications integrating flex rapidly. :)

Currently, when a mail is forwarded as a reminder, the sender needs to manually add all the recipients name from the original in the new mail and add additional recipients if required. This could be avoided, if they are pre filled. Implementing this idea could benifit in following manner 1. The sender does not need to maually enter the names 2. Productivity increase 3. User may miss out some names incase of manual entry, which can be avoided This could be done by giving an option of marking a mail as - "to be reminded later" and recipients could be stored and used later point in time.

The iPhone interface is nice & fast, and works (mostly) on my Blackberry and other non-iPhones (yes people actually do use other mobile devices).

You can view ideas, but the "votes" link doesn't work on ideas and I haven't yet tried to login to test.

It does seem that with a little tweaking, it could work for the vast majority of mobile devices.

It would be great if you could enhance the statistics to include a way to run statistics by timeframe.  For instance, as it stands now, you can not see spikes in activity beyond 5/6 weeks before.  It would be great to show an annual view or a view since inception to understand peeks and valleys of ideas, votes, comments.  It would even be better to create a way to define the time frame you are looking for.

Idea:
Idea jam is a great way to source, collaborate, and prioritze ideas, and apply a light processing to the idea through statuses.  One idea we have is when the community is interested in an idea, would there be a way to build in technology to allow people to elect to implement ideas, thus becoming the implementation owner?  As we use idea jam in our Firm, we think there may be an opportunity to further engage our community beyond just ideas, votes, comments.   Would there be a way to potentially engage them around implementation and allow them to elect to make the idea happen???

I saw something similar in another idea/innovation management product http://demo.kindlingapp.com
