Они положили его поперек заднего сидения микроавтобуса Фольксваген и обернули ремень безопасности вокруг талии, так чтобы он не упал. Дорога впереди была ухабистая. Он был одет только в шорты для бега. Доктор проверил марлевые повязки, всего их оказалось восемь. Он намазал мазью ожоги и сделал укол антибиотика в вену Патрика. Доктор сел напротив своего пациента и сунул свой маленький черный чемоданчик между ног. Патрик достаточно натерпелся. Теперь он будет защищен.
День или два отдыха, болеутоляющие и Патрик будет близок к выздоровлению. Ожоги оставят небольшие шрамы, которые возможно со временем станут малозаметными.
Доктор повернулся и похлопал его по плечу. Он был так доволен, что они не убили его. «Он готов», сказал он парню на переднем сидении. Водитель – бразилец завел мотор микроавтобуса и выпрыгнул из кабины.

Как избежать упоминания человека, который выслушивает обращённую к нему речь.

2.83 При наличии некоторых глаголов — сигналов прямой и косвенной речи мы обычно не упоминаем выслушивающего чужую речь в какой бы структуре эти глаголы ни употреблялись. Ниже приводятся основные глаголы данного типа.

Фразовый глагол 'touch on' используется таким же образом.

'They don't know what it takes to be successful,' asserted Mike Hyde.
Writer Simone de Beauvoir asserted that marriage is traditionally the destiny offered to women by society.
The statement asserted the rights of opposition groups to operate freely within the law.
The actors had volunteered to give an impromptu entertainment to while away the evening.
'I saw him come out of these woods, but I myself was on the hill opposite. I'll show you,' Miss Gray volunteered.

2.84Обратите внимание на следующее: при наличии глагола — сигнала 'answer' мы, как правило, не упоминаем выслушивающего чужую речь в тех случаях, когда данный глагол используется в полной структуре прямой и косвенной речи, при этом после него употреблена цитата или придаточное предложение, вводимое союзом 'that'. Если мы используем данный глагол в других структурах, мы можем сами решать, следует ли нам упоминать человека, выслушивающего обращённые к нему слова, или этого делать не надо.

When asked by the Queen what this would cost, Walpole, according to a famous story, answered that the price would be three crowns – England, Ireland and Scotland.

2.85 Мы обычно не упоминаем человека, выслушивающего чужую речь, при наличии многих глаголов — сигналов прямой речи, которые используются главным образом в структурах прямого цитирования, но не в структурах косвенной речи. (уроки 282, 283).

hey stopped every hour, precisely every sixty minutes, so the antenna could be raised and the cell phone could work around the mountains. Guy called Ste-phano, who was in his D. C. office with Hamilton Jaynes and a top official with the State Department. The Pentagon was being consulted.
What the hell was going on, Guy wanted to ask. Where did the feds come from?
In the first six hours they traveled a hundred miles. At times, the roads were almost impassable. They often fought with the phone trying to get Washington. At two in the afternoon, the roads improved as they left the mountains.

THE EXTRADITION ISSUE was sticky, and Hamilton Jaynes wanted no part of it. Important diplomatic strings were pulled. The Director of the FBI called the President's Chief of Staff. The American Ambassador to Paraguay got involved. Promises and threats were made.
A suspect with cash and resolve can stifle extradition from Paraguay for years, if not forever. This suspect had no money on him, and didn't even know what country he was in.
The Paraguayans reluctantly agreed to ignore extradition.
At four, Stephano instructed Guy to find the airport at Concepcion, a small city three hours by car from Asuncion. The Brazilian driver cursed, in Portuguese, when told to turn around and head north.

When I hung up, I crossed the room to the bedroom door. Here was a full-length mirror. In it was a tall, unshaven young man with a small potbelly, dressed only in baggy undershorts. "You have to get it together, big boy," I told my reflection. "Can't go through the rest of your life thinking that every time the phone rings it's someone calling to tell you your mother's dead."
Not that I would. Time would dull the memory, time always did . . . but it was amazing how real and immediate the night before still seemed. Every edge and corner was sharp and clear. I could still see Staub's good-looking young face beneath his turned-around cap, and the cigarette behind his ear, and the way the smoke had seeped out of the incision on his neck when he inhaled. I could still hear him telling the story of the Cadillac that was selling cheap. Time would blunt the edges and round the corners, but not for awhile. After all, I had the button, it was on the dresser by the bathroom door. The button was my souvenir. Didn't the hero of every ghost story come away with a souvenir, something that proved it had all really happened?

1.Указание на работу или хобби

-ian употребляется для образования новых существительных от прилагательных и имеющихся в языке существительных. Существительные, образованные таким способом, указывают на непосредственную связь работы или увлечения человека с понятиями, выраженными словами, от которых они образованы. Например, electrician “электрик» - человек, чьей работой является установка и ремонт электрооборудования, а historian “историк» - человек, специализирующийся на изучении исторической науки.
Обратите внимание, что dietician “диетврач» образуется от слова diet “диета», а beautician “косметолог» от слова beauty “красота».

Water heaters should be removed only by a qualified electrician.
The magician tossed the rabbit across the stage.
She works as a beautician in an expensive salon.

Например, Shakespearean “шекспировский» указывает на творческую манеру писателя или его эпоху, Victorian “викторианский» означает, что какое-либо действие произошло или что-то было сделано в Англии во времена правления королевы Виктории.
Орфографический комментарий: к именам собственным, оканчивающимся на 'e', как правило, добавляется 'an' вместо -ian, а иногда 'an' появляется и в более устоявшихся словах, таких, как Elizabethan “периода королевы Елизаветы».
