The Ransom of Red Chief by O. Henry (1)

О. Генри. Вождь краснокожих

IT LOOKED like a good thing: but wait till I tell you. We were down South, in Alabama -- Bill Driscoll and myself -- when this kidnapping ['kIdnxpIN] (похищение человека с целью выкупа) idea struck us. It was, as Bill afterward ['Rftqwqd] (позже) expressed it, "during a moment of temporary ['tempqrqrI] (временный) mental ['mentl] apparition ["xpq'rISqn] (помрачение ума)"; but we didn't find that out till later.

There was a town down there, as flat as a flannel ['flxnl]-cake (блин), and called Summit ['sAmIt] (Вершина), of course. It contained inhabitants [In'hxbItqnts] (жители) of as undeleterious [] (невредные) and self [self]-satisfied (самодовольный) a class of peasantry ['pezqntrI] (крестьянство) as ever clustered ['klAstqd] (теснились) around a Maypole ['meIpqul] (майский шест).

Bill and me had a joint (совместный) capital of about six hundred dollars, and we needed just two thousand dollars more to pull off a fraudulent ['frLdjulqnt] (мошеннический) scheme [skJm] (план) in Western Illinois with. We talked it over on the front steps of the hotel. Philoprogenitiveness (чадолюбие), says we, is strong in semi-rural ['semI-'ruqrql] (полу-сельская) communities [kq'mju:nItiz] (общины); therefore and for other reasons, a kidnapping ['kIdnxpIN] project['prPGekt] (план) ought to do better there than in the radius ['reIdjqs] (радиус действия) of newspapers that send reporters [rI'pLtqz] (корреспонденты) out in plain clothes to stir [stE:] up (раздувать) talk about such things. We knew that Summit couldn't get after us with anything stronger ['strPNq] (зд. страшнее) than constables ['kAnstqblz] (полицейские) and maybe some lackadaisical ["lxkq'deIzIkql] (апатичные) bloodhounds ['blAdhaundz] (сыщики) and a diatribe ['daIqtraIb] (резкая обличительная речь ) or two in the Weekly Farmers' Budget ['bAGIt] (бюджет). So, it looked good.

We selected [sI'lektId] (выбрали) for our victim ['vIktIm] (жертва) the only child of a prominent ['prPmInqnt] (видный) citizen named Ebenezer Dorset. The father was respectable [rIs'pektqbl] (почтенный) and tight, a mortgage fancier ['mLgIG 'fxnsIq] (любитель закладных) and a stern [stE:n] (строгий), upright collection-plate passer [kq'lekSqn pleIt 'pRsq] (церковный сборщик) and forecloser [] (лишающий права пользования). The kid [kId] (ребенок) was a boy of ten, with bas-relief ["bR-rI'lJf] (выпуклые ) freckles ['freklz] (веснушки), and hair the colour of the cover of the magazine you buy at the news-stand when you want to catch a train [treIn] (поезд). Bill and me figured ['fIgqd] (думали) that Ebenezer would melt down for a ransom ['rxnsqm] (выкуп) of two thousand dollars to a cent [sent] (цент= 0,01 доллара). But wait till I tell you.

About two miles from Summit was a little mountain, covered with a dense [dens] (густой) cedar ['sJdq] (кедровый) brake [breIk] (кустарник). On the rear elevation [rIq"elI'veISqn] (задний склон) of this mountain was a cave [keIv] (пещера). There we stored [stLd] (запасли) provisions. One evening after sundown ['sAndaun] (заката), we drove in a buggy ['bAgI] (тележка) past old Dorset's house. The kid [kId] (ребенок) was in the street, throwing rocks at a kitten ['kItn] (котенок) on the opposite fence.

"Hey [heI] (эй!), little boy!" says Bill, "would you like to have a bag of candy ['kxndI] (конфет) and a nice ride?"

The boy catches Bill neatly ['nJtlI] (прямо) in the eye with a piece of brick.

"That will cost the old man an extra ['ekstrq] (дополнительные) five hundred dollars," says Bill, climbing over the wheel [wJl] (колесо).

That boy put up a fight like a welter-weight ['weltq-weIt] (среднего веса) cinnamon ['sInqmqn] (бурый) bear; but, at last, we got him down in the bottom of the buggy ['bAgI] (тележка) and drove away. We took him up to the cave [keIv] (пещера) and I hitched [hICt] (привязывал) the horse in the cedar ['sJdq] (кедровый) brake [breIk] (кустарник). After dark I drove the buggy (тележка) to the little village, three miles away, where we had hired it, and walked back to the mountain.
