Dear subscribers!

I thought it might be useful to share some of the phrases that would readily be classed as slang in Australia.

  1. Arvo = afternoon e.g. Cya this arvo = See you this afternoon
  2. Aussie = Australian e.g. Aussies and Kiwis are welcome = Australians and New Zealanders ...
  3. Click = kilometre e.g. It's 30 clicks away
  4. Docket = a bill, receipt
  5. Doco = documentary
  6. Fair go = a chance e.g. They'll always give everyone a fair go, no matter who you are or what you believe
  7. G'Day = hello! e.g. G'Day mate!
  8. Heaps = a lot e.g. Thanks heaps!
  9. Iffy = dodgy e.g. I feel iffy today / about that = I feel uneasy today / unsure about that
  10. Kick the bucket = to die = to pass away
  11. Stoked = very pleased e.g. I was stocked when it showed up on my Kindle
  12. Rellies = relatives e.g. Her rellies are out of town this weekend so we could ...

There are more, of course, but those above are really widely in use.

Best regards,
Andrey Kostenko
