Dear subscribers!

Here are 15 common phrases and vocabulary that you might want to review:

  • Don't freak out. To freak out means to suddenly feel surprised, upset, angry, or confused.
  • Why the long face? It is used as an informal way of asking someone what's wrong if they look upset.
  • Are you nuts? Use it when you want to ask if somebody is in their right mind based on the actions they're carrying out. An alternative is to say "Are you crazy?"
  • I've got to get going. (I've got to go.) The two indicate a perceived need to leave in the near future.
  • Don't beat yourself up. To "beat yourself up" means to criticize yourself extra-strongly and feel extremely guilty and bad about something you did, or about some failure or mistake you made.
  • It's time. It's high time. The latter is used to say it is time to do something that should have been done a long time ago.
  • Easy peasy lemon squeezy. It is a playful way to describe a task or activity as extremely easy or simple to perform. You can also say "it is a piece of cake" to indicate that.
  • I owe you one. Use it to thank someone for helping you and as a way of saying that you will do something for them in the future.
  • No hard feelings, ok? If you say "no hard feelings", you are making an agreement with someone not to be angry or bitter about something.
  • Bite me! Use it to tell someone you are upset with them.
  • I do mind. Just another way to say "I object". What if I do mind?
  • Come again? Use it to ask someone to repeat or explain something they have said.
  • Level with me. To level with someone means to tell them the truth, especially when it may be unpleasant, for example: "She never levelled with her brother about the accident".
  • I don't think it's gross. I think it's kind of beautiful. If you describe something as gross, you think it is very unpleasant.
  • Are you mocking me? It's similar to "Are you making fun of me?" or "Are you laughing at me?". It's more negative compared to variants like: "Are you kidding me?" or "Are you joking?", which are often used as response to a situation that is unbelievable.

I hope some of the above was new or otherwise helpful.

Best regards,
Andrey Kostenko
