Dear subscribers!

Here are some interesting random observations I recently came across:

  • Which one of the two is right: "See you on next Monday" or "See you next Monday"? I'd say the latter is as good as "See you on Monday" but definitely not the former.
  • It is correct to say "in the near future" assuming we have only one future. However, it is still possible to use "a future" when we want to emphasize that possibilities are open for a future that is different, e.g. "In a future where data is everywhere, ..." or "In a future where every task is performed by robots and AI,...". I paused on this one for a while as if the future is not what it used to be, how come we should have only one of it?
  • Along the lines of better known Affect vs. Effect or Accept vs. Except, there is also Allude vs. Elude: "allude" means to indirectly refer to something, while "elude" means to escape or avoid someone's grasp.
  • Peak vs. Peek vs. Pique: A "peak" is the highest point of something; a "peek" is a quick glance; and "pique", when used as a verb, means to provoke curiosity or interest.
  • Idiom "Break a leg" is often confused with "good luck". It is used as a way of wishing someone good luck, particularly before a performance or presentation, while the latter simply wishes luck without any specific context.
  • In "I tried reading that complicated manual, but I couldn't make heads or tails of it", the idiom means to be unable to understand or comprehend something.
  • "Cut back" is the phrasal verb for the formal verb "decrease", as "build up" is for "increase", "wrap up" is for "complete" and "bring back" is for "remember".

I hope some of the above was useful.

Best regards,
Andrey Kostenko
