Everybody, Somebody, Anybody, Nobody.

В этой части урока мы предлагаем вам выполнить упражнение на употребление Everybody, Somebody, Anybody, Nobody.

Exercise 2. Read the story, supplying Everybody, Somebody, Anybody, Nobody.

Who is to blame?
This is a story about four people named Everybody, Somebody, Anybody and Nobody. There was an important job to be done and Everybody was sure that Somebody would do it. Anybody could have done it, but Nobody did it.

Exercise 3. Translate into russian.

As he pulled into the driveway of number four, the first thing he saw -- and it didn't improve his mood — was the tabby cat he'd spotted that morning. It was now sitting on his garden wall. He was sure it was the same one; it had the same markings around its eyes.

"Shoo!" said Mr. Dursley loudly. The cat didn't move. It just gave him a stern look. Was this normal cat behavior? Mr. Dursley wondered. Trying to pull himself together, he let himself into the house. He was still determined not to mention anything to his wife.

Mrs. Dursley had had a nice, normal day. She told him over dinner all about Mrs. Next Door's problems with her daughter and how Dudley had learned a new word ("Won't!"). Mr. Dursley tried to act normally. When Dudley had been put to bed, he went into the living room in time to catch the last report on the evening news:

Exercise 4. Translate into english.

Расхожее выражение "каждый развлекается как может" звучало так, словно свидетельствовало о некой добродетели. Возможно -- однако нет хуже, чем если ведьма заскучает и примется сама себя развлекать, ибо кое-кто грешит на редкость превратными представлениями о веселье. А такой могущественной ведьмы, как Эсме, здешние горы, без сомнения, не видели уже много поколений.
Впрочем, близились Испытания, а это всегда на несколько недель приводило Эсме Ветровоск* в порядок. Она кидалась в бой, как форель -- на блесну.
Нянюшка Ягг** всякий раз с нетерпением ждала Испытаний Ведьм: прекрасный отдых на открытом воздухе плюс большой костер. Слыханное ли дело -- Испытания Ведьм без хорошего заключительного костра!
А после можно печь в золе картошку.

They'd told her the world was round and flat, which was common sense, and went through space on the back of four elephants standing on the shell of a turtle, which didn't have to make sense. It was all happening Out There somewhere, and it could continue to do so with Nanny's blessing and disinterest so long as she could live in a personal world about ten miles across, which she carried around with her.
But Esme Weatherwax needed more than this little kingdom could contain. She was the other kind of witch.
And Nanny saw it as her job to stop Granny Weatherwax getting bored. The business with the apples was petty enough, a spiteful little triumph when you got down to it, but Esme needed something to make every day worthwhile and if it had to be anger and jealousy then so be it. Granny would now scheme for some little victory, some tiny humiliation that only the two of them would ever know about, and that'd be that. Nanny was confident that she could deal with her friend in a bad mood, but not when she was bored. A witch who is bored might do anything.
