to make out - to understand
1. From the bedroom Mary was calling but the noise of the storm was too loud for him to make out what she was saying. (G. Gordon)

to get on with somebody - to like and naturally agree with somebody

In this issue we will speak about usefull idioms.
Below is presented a list of idioms. Learn it by heart.

Go away - leave.
Go in for - enter a competition, exam.
Go on - continue, happen.
Go round - be enough for everyone to have a share.
Go through - examine in detail.
Call for - require, demand.
Call in - visit briefly.
Call of - cancel.
Call out - shout, send for sn in emergency.

Exersice 1. Fill in the correct.
1. Ben went ...... the competition and won first prize.
2. Ssh, there's a meeting going ........ next door.
3. Will're going ..... working after the baby's born?
4. The teacher went ....... my homework to check for mistakes.
5. We're going ..... on holiday tomorrow morning.

PRESENT CONTINUOUS  
 
                  - be(в нужной форме) + ing
negative      - noun + be(в нужной форме) + not + ing
negative      - be(в нужной форме) + noun + not + ing
 
   продолжительность действия, его незаконченность - для всех Continuous
   длительное действие, которое происходит в момент речи
   наличие слов, обозначающих момент речи (now, at this moment) не обязательно, так как сама форма времени выражает, что действие происходит сейчас
   для выражения длительного действия, которое происходит в настоящий период времени, но не обязательно в момент речи
   для выражения будущего длительного действия вместо Future Continuous в обстоятельственных придаточных предложениях условия и времени, которые вводятся союзами if, when, while etc
   для сообщении о действии, которое совершится в будущем, но которое запланировано уже сейчас или когда выражается намерение совершить действие, или есть уверенность в совершении действия; в этом случае, как правило, в предложении имеется обстоятельство времени, указывающее не будущее время
   to be going to; для выражения намерения совершить действие или уверенности в его совершении в будущем
   to be going to; для выражения большой вероятности или неизбежности совершение действия в будущем, подлежащее в этом случае является неодушевленным предметом
   to be going to; с этой формой не употребляются глаголы to go, to come; если нужно их употребить, то оборот выглядит как Present Continuous - to be going, to be coming
   во временах группы Continuous не употребляются глаголы восприятия, речи, желания, выражающие умственные состояния, движения: to be, to have, to put, to open, to bring, to close, to see, to hear, to recognize, to want, to understand, to love, to like, to hate, to wish, to desire, to feel, to notice, to know, to remember, to forget, to beleive, to seem, to appear, to possess, to contain, to consist; для выражения действия, совершающегося в момент речи с этими глаголами нужно использовать Present Indefinite
   PASSIVE: страдательный залог, длительность действия, настоящее время, совпадающее с моментом речи

Exercise 3. Translate into russian.

She threw a sharp, sideways glance at Dumbledore here, as though hoping he was going to tell her something, but he didn't, so she went on. "A fine thing it would be if, on the very day YouKnow-Who seems to have disappeared at last, the Muggles found out about us all. I suppose he really has gone, Dumbledore?"
"It certainly seems so," said Dumbledore. "We have much to be thankful for. Would you care for a lemon drop?"
"A what?"
"A lemon drop. They're a kind of Muggle sweet I'm rather fond of"
"No, thank you," said Professor McGonagall coldly, as though she didn't think this was the moment for lemon drops. "As I say, even if You-Know-Who has gone — "
"My dear Professor, surely a sensible person like yourself can call him by his name? All this 'You-Know-Who' nonsense — for eleven years I have been trying to persuade people to call him by his proper name: Voldemort." Professor McGonagall flinched, but Dumbledore, who was unsticking two lemon drops, seemed not to notice. "It all gets so confusing if we keep saying 'You-Know-Who.' I have never seen any reason to be frightened of saying Voldemort's name.

И они, несомненно, заметили некоторые вещи. Падающие звезды в Кенте – держу пари, что это был Дебалус Дигль. Ему всегда не хватало ума.» «Вы не можете обвинять их, - мягко сказал Дамбльдор. - У нас было так мало поводов для праздника в течение одиннадцати лет.»

Exercise 4. Translate into english.

She knew this was flying in the face of protocol. There should be at least seven more minutes of small talk before anyone got around to the point, but Letice's presence was getting on her nerves.
'It's about Esme Weatherwax,' said Gammer Beavis.
'Yes?' said Nanny, without surprise.
'I suppose she's entering?'
'Never known her stay away.'
Letice sighed.
'I suppose you ... couldn't persuade her to ... not to enter this year?'
Nanny looked shocked.
'With an axe, you mean?'
In unison, the three witches sat back.
'You see -' Gammer began, a bit shamefaced.
'Frankly, Mrs Ogg,' said Letice, 'it is very hard to get other people to enter when they know that Miss Weatherwax is entering. She always wins.'
