Kazakhstan: Hare Krishnas Face Government Repression

ALMATY, August 1, 2007. The Kazakh media covers scandals and the upcoming parliamentary elections, but has mostly ignored a dispute between the Kazakh government and the Kazakhstan Society of Krishna Consciousness (Hare Krishna) that highlights a troublesome situation for those in Kazakhstan whose religion differs from the two traditional and officially approved religions, Sunni Islam and Orthodox Christianity.

ALMATY. The authorities of the Karasai district, Almaty province, render a blow on the image of Kazakhstan by demolishing the houses and buildings of the Krishnas. This opinion was expressed today at a press conference in Almaty by the director of the Kazakhstan International Bureau for Human Rights and Rule of Law, Evgeniy Zhovtis.
