UNIT 2

1) Grammar

Сегодня в разделе грамматический материал мы рассмотрим время Present Simple, широко известное также как Present Indefinite.

a) Как обычно, для начала рассмотрим ситуацию, которая поможет нам понять когда употребляется настоящее неопределенное время: 

Алекс - водитель автобуса. В момент речи Алекс спит, следовательно:

He is not driving a bus (he is asleep).

But: He drives a bus

Вот как образуется время Present Simple:

I/we/you/they    drive

he/she/it              drives

Мы употребляем Present Simple, чтобы говорить о вещах в общем. Употребляя это время мы не думаем ТОЛЬКО о настоящем. Мы используем его, чтобы сказать, что что-то члучается все время, действие повторяется, или что утверждение справедливо в общем. Не важно, происходит ли действие в момент речи:

                            - The Earth goes round the Sun.

                            - Nurses look after patients in hospitals.

                            - In Britain most of the shops close at 5.30 p.m.

Помните, что когда мы употребляем Present Simple для he/shу/it, к глаголу добавляется окончание -s. Не забывайте об -s:

                            - I work in a bank. Barry works in a shop.

b) Мы употребляем do/does для образования вопросов и отрицательных предложений:

               do   I/we/you/they    work?

            does   he/she/it             work?

                  I/we/you/they    don't         work

                  he/she/it             doesn't     work

Рассмотрим несколько примеров:

                            - Excuse me, do you speak English?

                            - 'Would you like a cigarette?' 'No thanks. I don't smoke'

                            - What does this word mean? (not 'What means this word?')

                            - Rice doesnt grow in Britain.

Нюансы построения вопросов мы рассмотрим в одном из наших следующих уроков.

c) Мы употребляем Present Simple когда мы говорим о том, как часто мы делаем те или иные вещи:

                            - I get up at 8 o'clock every morning. (not 'am getting')

                            - How often do you go to the dentist?

                            - Ann doesn't often drink tea.

                            - In summer Tom usually plays tennis twice a week.

d) Заметьте, что мы говорим 'Where do you come from?' (= Where are you from):

                            - Where do you come from? (not where are you coming from?)

                            - He comes from Japan. (not 'He is coming from Japan')

Выполните несколько упражнений по пройденному материалу. После выполнения можете послать их мне для проверки.

2.1. В этом упражнении Вам необходимо вставить глагол в скобках в предложение в правильной форме:

Пример:

Water boils (boil) at 100 degrees centigrade.

9.I don't understand the word 'deceive'. What _________________ ('deceive'/mean)

Glossary

heaven - небеса, небо
guardian - опекун; куратор, попечитель; страж, защитник, хранитель
guardian angel - ангел-хранитель, добрый гений; разговорное - парашют : )
Corona - корона ( ореол вокруг небесного светила ); венец, отливина
lime - известь; накипь, осадок, окалина
divide - делить
hate - ненависть
frown - сдвинутые брови; хмурый взгляд; насупленность, нахмуренность
kingdom - королевство; империя, царство, государство
crown - венок; венец; корона
palace - дворец
court - двор
spend - тратить, расходовать
zipper - застежка-молния
blood - кровь
nuclear - ядерный; относящийся к атомному ядру; относящийся к ядерной энергии; относящийся к ядерному оружию
pretend - ритворяться, делать вид; симулировать

3) Humour

Немного об английском языке : ) :

Lets face it....
English is a stupid language.
There is no egg in the eggplant
No ham in the hamburger
And neither pine nor apple in the pineapple
English muffins were not invented in England
French fries were not invented in France
We sometimes take English for granted
But if we examine its paradoxes we find that

And a guinea pig is neither from Guinea nor is it a pig.
If writers write, how come fingers don't fing.
If the plural of tooth is teeth,
Shouldn't the plural of phone booth be phone beeth.
If the teacher taught,why didn't the preacher praught.
If a vegetarian eats vegetables,
What the heck does a humanitarian eat?
Why do people recite at a play
Yet play at a recital?
Park on driveways and
Drive on parkways
How can the weather be as hot as hell on one day
And as cold as hell on another?
You have to marvel at the unique lunacy
Of a language where a house can burn up as It burns down
And in which you fill in a form by filling it out
And a bell is only heard once it goes!
English was invented by people, not computers
And it reflects the creativity of the human race
(Which of course isn't a race at all)
That is why
When the stars are out, they are visible
But when the lights are out, they are invisible
And why is it that when I wind up my watch,
It starts
But when I wind up this poem,
It ends.
