Eugen Herrigel, 1953. Zen in the Art of Archery. London: Routledge and Kegan Paul (p.18).
The Dane Eugene Herrigel spent many years in Japan acquirung the skills of archery. By 'working' at this 'sport' he in fact took himself to be 'working' on himself. Herrigel's hook provides a pioneering account ol what can he thought of as the 'Sell-work ethic'.
Zen Buddhism has struck out on paths which, through methodical immersion in oneself, lead to one's becoming aware, in the deepest ground of the soul, of the unnamable Groundlessness and Qualitylessness - nay more, to one's becoming one with it. And this, with respect to archery and expressed in very tentative and on that account possibly miisleading language, means that the spiritual exercises, thanks to which alone the technique of archery becomes an art and, if all fects itself as the 'artless art','are mystical exercises, and accordingly archery can in no circumstances mean accomplishing anything outwardly with bow and arrow, but only inwardly, with oneself. Bow and arrow are only a pretext for something that could just as well happen without them, only the way to a goal, not the goal itself, only helps for the last decisive leap.
Sai Baba: 'bliss'
Sai Baba, cited in Samuel H. Sandweiss, 1975: Sai Baba The Holy Man... and Psychiatrist. New Delhi: M. Gulab Singh & Sons (p. 116).
Sai Baba, the most influential of all contemporary Indian gurus, writes of the shift from the dull realm of delusion to what the 'Highest Self' has to offer.
Do not tell me that you do not care for that bliss, that you are satisfied with the delusion and are not willing to undergo the rigors of sleeplessness. Your basic nature, believe me, abhors this dull, dreary routine of eating, drinking and sleeping. In seeks something which in knows it has lost - santhi, inward contentment. It seeks liberation from bondage to the trivial and the temporary. Everyone craves for it in his heart of hearts. And it is available only in one shop: contemplation of the Highest Self, the basis of all this appearance.
