Заверитель: something/C=ru

Tusker.

Lotus 7

You cannot apply an ACL to the root data folder. Select a folder uder the root folder.

The editors here at DominoPower send congratulations to the nine members of the new OpenNTF Steering Committee. OpenNTF, if you're not familiar with it, is the new open source community dedicated to creating resources for Notes and Domino users, developers, and administrators.

Among the members of the steering committee are many friends of DominoPower and leaders of the Notes/Domino community. They are Elguji Software's Bruce Elgort, Lotus 911's Nathan Freeman, Vince Schuurman, PAVONE AG's Ludwig Nastansky, Prominic.NET's Justin Hill (who helped save our bacon from a nastyDDoS this weekend), PCS's John Head, SNAPPS Consulting's Rob Novak, IBM's Brent Peters, and Teamstudio's very own Scott Johnsen.

Congrats to everyone. Now get to work!

Just recently I've been doing more and more work with SQL and Domino. Sometimes trying to get them to live in unity. This is what I am trying to do now as I work on a Domino With Google Gears proof of concept.

While working with both a SQL backend and a Domino backend one recurring issue I'm finding is that of date-time formats and getting one to understand the other.

If you create a SQL table to hold details of a set of Notes document and you want to add a "Created Date" column then you'll probably get stuck converting Notes' dates to SQL dates.

LotusScript Function

The easiest way I've found is to get them both to talk to each other in "Unix time" -- that is, the number of seconds elapsed since midnight on 1st Jan 1970.

To do this I created a little LotusScript function to work out the Unix time for a given variant of type Date, such as a document's LastModified property. Here's the function:

Function getTimeStamp(dt As Variant) As Long Dim dtEpoch As New NotesDateTime("1/1/1970 00:00:00") Dim dtTemp As New NotesDateTime(Now) dtTemp.LSLocalTime = dt getTimeStamp = dtTemp.TimeDifference(dtEpoch)
End Function

Usage:

Msgbox getTimeStamp(doc.LastModified)
Msgbox getTimeStamp(Now)

Prints out something like:

1243500324
1243510655

These values can then be stored in a SQL column of type "timestamp" and we can use SQL to convert to any format we like. Hey presto.

Your Thoughts?

Before I wrote the function I only did a cursory check that there isn't a method to get this number from a NotesDateTime already. Hopefully there isn't and I've not publically shamed myself yet again?

gearsWhat follows is a no nonsense introduction to Google Gears. It's what you need to know but maybe haven't bothered to find out and it comes with as little tech speak and buzzwords as possible.

What Does Gears Do?

You probably know already that Gears lets you take web applications offline. What you might not know is how it does it and at what cost.

How Does it Do it?

Gears gives us, the developer, two tools:

  1. A local database to store information in.
  2. A way to store HTML, JavaScript, CSS and image files on the local machine and then serve them to the browser even when there's no network connection.

When combined the above two abilities give you a way to display and edit data while offline!

The interface to both the database and the "LocalServer" is via new JavaScript methods and objects added to the browser by the Gears install.

The database Gears uses on the local machine is based on SQLite.

Install?

Before an end user can use Gears to go offline they need to install it. Foregoing any corporate rollout this means the user needs to download a .exe file (for Windows), find it, open it, install it etc and restart their browser. Something that's bound to trip up a couple of users but a necessary evil, I guess.

Gears and Domino?

I know what you're probably wondering - does Gears work with Domino? Yes, it does. Just don't expect to drop a couple of .JS files in your database and have it up and running. It's not as easy as that, by any means. Taking your Domino applications offline with Gears would involve a lot of work.

Whether it's feasible to do so or not depends on your app. One obvious restriction to Gears is that it can't mimic your server-side logic/workflow/emailing etc. What you could do instead is have all this logic run, as usual, when the user re-syncs their change back to the server.

Next week I'll show you a working demo of a simple Domino-Gears database. By simple I mean simple. A list of documents (with one field on it!) on a one-paged applications which allows you to edit the field values offline and then re-sync when online.

Things To Note:

Here are a couple of things I've noticed which I didn't necessarily expect:

  • When you install Gears on a Windows machine it installs itself for both IE and Firefox, which is nice. However, if you go offline in one you won't be able to work with the data in the other. This is because they use different databases and, I guess, different stores of local files!
  • The LocalServer is very URL-sensitive: If you go offline while at the following address:
    http://www.codestore.net/apps/gears.nsf/
Then you won't get a cached/offline copy of the site if you try to visit any of the following without a network connection:
    http://www.codestore.net/apps/gears.nsf
    http://www.codestore.net/apps/Gears.nsf
    http://codestore.net/apps/gears.nsf/

It would be REALLY great to see Foundations become a Quickr platform, as this could certainly lead to the "one server to rule them all" model for small businesses.

This would also really be a win against Sharepoint - as you can easily add Sharepoint to a Windows Small Business Server, but you can't easily extend Foundations with other Domino add-ons.

Tags: cluster creating replica
Idea:
For administrators of Lotus Domino Cluster environments it would be helpful to have the ability to create cluster replicas directly from the Cluster Database Directory.

But it would be better the have the possibility to set the following:
- Server recognises that it runs in a Domino Cluster
- Administrator has the abillity to mark directories in the CLDBDIR.NSF which have to be clusterd ( e.g. the MAIL-directory )
- Server automatically creates a replica of the missing databases on the other cluster server via an AdminP-request
- Administrator gets noticed of this replication actions via mail or via DDM.NSF

Wouldn´t that be helpful ???

Idea:
When trying to fix private views, Out of Office agents or other agents that are tied to the user ID; you need to log in with the user's ID in order to see what the users see.  It would be neat to allow designer's or Notes administrators the ability to open up views or run agents as a different user, without have to use the user's ID file.

I would like the functionality to be similar to the "Full Access Administrator" that we currently have.  Very similar to the way the you would SU to Root in a linux/unix environment.

I don't know if this is resolved with the ID Vault.
