Yesterday we mentioned Mark Hughes' To Do app for the iPhone. Mark managed to record a 3-minute demo of the application, which he's posted to his blog.

Some time ago I added a demo to the DEXT database that showed how to create a Notes document which contained a Zip file which, in turn, contained the contents of the NSF in HTML format. A backup file, if you will.

Although the demo is there and I can see people have used it, it was always my intention to talk about it on here. So, here goes.

The Concept

The concept is simple -- a WQS Java agent loops a view and creates a HTML file for each document and then adds it to a Zip file. At the same time it also creates an "index.html" file with links to all these HTML documents.

The index file is added to the root of the Zip file and the HTML documents are added to a subfolder within it.

When the WQS agent has done it attaches the Zip file to the "backup" document that is being created and this is then presented to the user for them to download and keep.

What This Looks Like

When you download and extract the Zip file you end up with a fully navigable website in a folder. You can then upload the folder to a normal web server and it would still work.

Here's an example Zip file I created earlier. Download and extract it to see for yourself.

Here's what the root of the extracted folder looks like:

backup1

Opening the index file would show you a list of all the articles within it.

Notice there's also subfolders. In this case it's called "articles" but you could call it anything and/or have more than one to match the View structure of the source database.

If you look inside the "articles" folder you'll see something like:

backup2

See how there's a HTML document for each Notes document and they have the name of the original document's UNID.

Notice also that there are subfolders that also have the name of document's UNIDs. These subfolders contain any attachments (inside a further subfolder called "$file").

backup3

In the example Zip's index file looks for the article near the bottom called "The day before the 25th" and open that. Notice the inline image is intact!

Why?

Good question. You could of course make a backup just by creating a new copy of the NSF. However, what if, say, you wanted to migrate away from Domino, or you were leaving a company and going somewhere without Notes. Etc. Whatever the reason it's a useful tool.

The Code

The code of the demo is all inside the latest DEXT download. If you can't be bothered to download and look in there just to get an idea what the code does, then here are two Java files which contain all the code: Backup.Java and ZipIt.Java.

YMMV

Idea:
I know that it is possible to sign agents and script libraries (but not the Database Script) from designer, by going to them and signing, but what I'd like to see is a Sign action somewhere in Designer - say on the Tools menu, next to Recompile all LotusScript, that enables me to sign the entire database with the current ID, rather than having to start the Admin client.

Tags: notes policy symphony
Idea:
Add the IBM Lotus Symphony-File Type Associations preference to Select the file types to automatically create with IBM Lotus Symphony to the Symphony policy settings document in the Domino directory.  Currently this is set by default to Open Document Format in the Lotus Notes client.  In a scenario where a phased install of Symphony to replace Microsoft Office occurs, people without Symphony will still be using Office and won't be able to open the ODF files created by those on Symphony.  Having a policy would avoid having to change the setting manually after each install/upgrade to Notes 8 with the Symphony editors.

Tags: auto-populate groups directory
Idea:
Currently authors (owners and administrators) for a group document can configure auto populate settings.  In an environment where group ownership is delegated to the business owners, it isn't desired to have them to be able to enable the auto-populate feature for the group.  If auto-populate is enabled and no home server is selected, the group members field is emptied when the updater runs the auto-populate task.  Groups then need to be restored from backup.

Idea:
When arriving on the home page, the view should be a quick synopsis of the community.  It would be nice to include what activity has occurred since you last visit, top 10 most popular, top 10 most recent, what's hot etc.  I would even add, have a space where admins can define ideas they want to highlight in the community (favorite ideas, other interesting ideas).  Right now, when you land on the home page, pages and pages of ideas can seem very overwhelming.

A nice feature to add would be an option to vote on the helpfulness of comments.  Some comments are more important to read than others.  They are more valuable due to the thought, knowledge, or information included.

I think the default should be sharing your ideas, votes, and comments in the dashboard/profile when someone lands on your profile.  It would be nice if there was an option if you would rather set your activity to private.  Some people may not want others to know their activity.

Even after seeing how many votes the "don't retire LS" option got, I'm still not sure whether IBM will add new features to LS or just concentrate on xPages and SSJS and expand that to be the new default language and UI in Notes. It would be great if IBM could say something to this and make the roadmap regarding language support clear. Either way is better than not knowing.

Idea:
It would be really cool if there was some way to have a heirarchy of the servers notes.ini settings.  What I mean is that if I have multiple configuration documents, that if I want to add something to all my servers, I can go int ojust the "All Server" configuration docuemtn and put it there.  The selective configuation documents NOTES.INI Settings are for settings that are specific to just this sub-group of servers or to override the default in the "All Server"S configuration document.
Now, when I'm trying to use DCT to clean-up my configurations, I have to add the same parameter into multiple configuration documents (I'm a small Domino shop and only have 4 different configuration documents),  I'm always wondering do I get everywhere I need it or did I get interrupted in the middle of things and miss one.

Some people have asked how they can install rich client components from the OpenNTF catalog into their Notes clients. I've created a short video that describes this. In summary you need Lotus Notes 8.0.1 or higher, you need to enable the widgets feature ...

Tags: profile elect ideaspace
Idea:

We are receiving many requests from users interested in viewing ideas in a particular ideaspace / subideaspace.  This is because people who have interest, or better yet - responsibility, would like to have a notification for ideas that come into that particular ideaspace or subideaspace.  This would help engage people that have knowledge and insight into a particular ideaspace.  Could we create a way for users to elect a notification on new ideas posted to ideaspaces and subideaspaces?   This would be elected from their profile. This would also help drive on-going participation and activity as community participants would be notified instantaneously of new ideas.
