This appears to be our week for Skype questions. Readers Jeb Hayfarmer and Yeva Hourig both wanted to know about Sametime and Skype integration, but from different directions. Jeb wanted to know how to make it happen and Yeva wanted to know, essentially, why bother.

Let's first look at Yeva's question:

Bunch of my users are always at me to make Sametime work with Skype. I tell them Sametime better than Skype, but they don't listen. They insist. Why don't they listen? Sametime does voice and it does text and all the rest.

Well, Yeva, long experience has told me that our user constiuencies want what they want and it's often hard to dissuade them from something once they're set on an idea. But I think I know what's going on.

Sametime is an excellent enterprise-level messaging and collaboration platform, but the key here is "enterprise". There are a lot of people in the world that don't use Sametime, either because they've never had the pleasure of using it, or because they're just not part of an organization that would field something as powerful and flexible as Sametime.

On the other hand, Skype is free, easy, and everywhere. My guess is that your users want to connect with Skype users, and don't really want to install Skype and manage both user directories in separate applications.

And that brings us to Jeb, who asks:

Is there any way to integrate Skype with Sametime. I know there are different protocols, but if we could even just merge the directories, it'd be a start.

As far as I know, there's only one way to integrate Sametime and Skype, and that's with a Sametime plugin from Pentos in Munich.

They offer a neat little program called Sametime 2 Skype that puts the Skype contact list into the Sametime window, and lets you initiate virtually all of the Skype services directly from the Sametime window.

There appear to be some caveats, though. First, every computer with Sametime and the Sametime 2 Skype plugin will also need the full Skype installed as well. Second, it doesn't look like you can set up audio chats or text message chats as a conference with some members using Skype and some using Sametime. Hopefully, we'll see that sometime soon.

Idea:
SameTime should be able to detect if the user is working on a remote machine. If so the SameTime status should be updated accordingly.

The current scenario is that the contacts of the user are not aware if the user is busy working on a remote machine. Hence sometimes time taken by the user to respond to any of the contacts is mistaken for delay on his/her part where as in reality the user was not aware of the fact that he/she was pinged.

If SameTime can detect that the active process  of the machine relates to remote machine or virtual machine, it can update the status accordingly. This is will ensure the contacts of the user are aware that the user might not respond immediatly since he/she is working on a remote machine.

Tags: agent cluster
Idea:
For some applications it doesn't matter which server it runs on, as long as it runs.
In addition to selecting which server the agent is to run on, there should be an option to choose which cluster, perhaps with an primary server, or the administration server could be set as primary.

When an agent is set to run in a cluster, it should automatically switch to another server if its primary server goes down.

Tags: AddThis sharing
Idea:
It would be a nice addition to the application to have the ability to use the AddThis service for sharing links to ideas.  It should be relatively easy to add the option to the configuration document and have the code for displaying the AddThis functionality to the form.  Optional configuration would be able to be done via the languages settings.

Tags: server console commands
Idea:
On the Server Console, in the Admin client, it is possible to manually input the command one wants to be executed. To repeat commands, the Arrow-Up key will walk through the list of commands most recently entered. The list is always empty when the Admin client is started.

I'd like to give the list a more permanent character, so that I walk through the commands when I invoke the Admin client again.

The list could simply be stored in the notes.ini file of the user. An additional notes.ini parameter could be useful to indicate hte size of the list.

Idea:
Make a new group type in the Lotus Domino Server Address book. This group type would be "Sametime contact list only". The purpose would be to have the ability to have groups within the organization that are available in the Sametime contacts list while not available for emailing.

An example of how this would be useful for our organization is our group structure in the Address Book. We have several larger groups which are of type "Access Control List only". When requested we will switch the group type to Multiple purpose so send out larger emails and then switch it back again to avoid the enevitable "Reply to All" crew.

The problem - The problem with this is I can never use these groups in my (wonderful) embedded Sametime client. So I propose an additional Group Type called "Sametime contact list only". I would also request that the critea for including these group in the lookup (that sametime does) include the Multi-purpose for consistancy.

Idea:
February would be a good month for a "Presentation Skills" training class, delivered virtually. This session, or a few sessions, would assist new, experienced, and potential Lotus Community speakers to learn how to deliver effective presentations.

Lotus User Groups, looking for potential speakers, would know that by contacting a speaker that has "graduated" from this session, would have a base level of competency.

February would be a good month for such a session as Lotusphere is done, there are rarely any User Group meetings, and Lotusphere Comes to You has yet to start.

Tags: reply close mail
Idea:
When you reply to a mail and actually send it, the orginal mail you are replying to remains open and you have to close it manually.

If you are replying to the mail however it means you have already read the original one... so why not close it automatically?

Tags: reply button reply button
Idea:
The reply button of a view is cut into 2 parts : the reply itself and a drop-down menu for the reply options.

In the memo itself, the button does not have the two parts. You always have to choose an option from the drop-down menu. You cannot reply by simply clicking once on the button.

Why not have the same button in the memo as in the view? It would avoid a lots of clicks...

Idea: If I can't vote on a idea either because it's closed or withdrawn remove it from my unvoted list once I've read it.
It doesn't make sense to have it on the list if I can't vote on it, neither does having a 'No opinion' button, I might have one, I'm just not allowed express it.

Tags: workflow event time
Idea:
Timed activities are manual activities which let the designer specify a deadline (based on routing-time, claiming-time or any given deadline). When this deadline is reached the activity should be claimed (if not already) and completed. It should be possible to check in a decisionpoint whether an activity was completed manually or timed out. Scenarios using this feature:
  • user may complain during a given period of time
  • user should aknowledge a job (without the possibility to stop the whole job)

Tags: workflow ooop out-of-office
Idea:
It should be possible to mark Activities for periodical (re-)evaluation of the participants to allow substitutes to work on a specific job. If a workflow is routed to somebody, an this person leaves office next day, the administrator has to react. Implementing the idea will recalculate the participants.

Tags: ooop out-of-office mailfile
Idea:
The OOOP of Lotus Workflow should be linked to the out of office-functionality in the mail application. Benefit for the user is, he only has to set his ooo-state in a single place.

Tags: workflow email
Idea:
Workflows usually genereate some emails. This function is pretty plain within Lotus Workflow. There are some real important features missing, like the "CC"-Option (I didn't count the times I've benn asked about...). So what could be done better?
  • Full access to all common email fields (to, cc, bcc, subject, body)
  • sending HTML-formated emails
  • using patterns to generate emails
  • ability to customize link and message pointing to the job
  • ability to customize system emails (inbox notification, inbox overdue notification, overdue notification, ...)

Author: Dirk Stelloh
Tags: workflow organization organisation
Idea:
The organization directory is pretty important to Lotus Workflow. When using a single organization directory within multiple instances of workflow application, things get somewhat confusing. It's hard to determine, which entries should be used with which application.
  • It should be possible to arrange Job-Properties, Relations etc. in custom categories.
  • Categories should be reflected in the views of organization directory
  • Categories should also be reflected in the selectionboxes/lists in the architect

This Reviewer's Guide provides an extensive overview of the latest version of IBM's social software, Lotus Connections 2.5, and its eight services: Home Page, Profiles, Activities, Blogs, Bookmarks, Communities, Files, and Wikis. In addition, this guide explains how to extend the features and functionalities of Lotus Connections to your existing applications.
In some cases, a Lotus® Domino® server running on non-Windows platforms (UNIX®, i5/OS®, z/OS®) does not automatically change to the correct time when Daylight Saving Time (DST) ends. Restarting the Domino server will synchronize its clock with the operating system.
You have a LotusScript agent that uses the NotesView GetDocumentByKey or GetAllDocumentsByKey method and are seeing this error message: Error 4000: %a's Certification Log or Error 4678: The collection has become invalid
Time on the Domino server moves ahead or behind the Operating Systems time.
A new error handling code can cause crashes in a Lotus Notes client or Lotus Domino server. Errors are now generated with additional supporting information. This additional information is ignored by some functions (for example, in LotusScript) and can lead to a crash when another error is encountered and processed. The crash shows nnotes.SprintfOutput or nnotes.UNIsprintf in the stack.
