imagesHaving suffered my HTC Snap for a few months I finally had enough of it and this week I bought a HTC Hero. So far I am loving it! I can't believe the difference between the two. It's like they were released a decade apart -- not in the same year.

I surprised myself by buying another HTC product after they gave me such awful customer support following my complaints about the Snap. I had to swallow my pride to do so.

The temptation was to just buy an iPhone, but, I dunno, that just doesn't seem very cool. With the Hero and Android I feel like I have a much more open phone and something I can play with and enjoy. Besides, the iPhone 3GS is too bloody expensive anyway.

While the Hero feels quite "Googley" it's not over the top and, in fact, is quite handy. There's lots of stuff with the Maps API in use to great effect and the Gmail client is quite cool.

It's even tempted me to start using the Twitter account I registered ages ago and did nothing with.

There's An App For That

In the couple of days I've had the Hero I've already managed to find a few hours spare to install the Android SDK in to Eclipse and I'm now at the point where I've built my very own (database-driven!) app for it. Took hardly any time at all. Two or three hours to get it installed, written and compiled.

Here's my app running in the emulator that comes as part of the SDK:

 ScreenShot004

The app's home screen shows a summary of expenses I've logged -- what, when and how much. I can add/edit them, like so:

ScreenShot002

It's a bit unpolished but it's been fun so far and amazing to see how easy it is to develop an actual application for the phone.

The idea of the app is that I can record our household's outgoings as they happen (while out shopping and in "offline" mode). When I get home I can then upload them straight in to our copy of the Accounts database - rather than coming home and trying to remember what I spent where.

I could have done this with Gears, but that would have been too boring. I already know Gears and fancied learning something new. That said, my Gears knowledge came in handy as, like Gears, Android uses a SQLite backend for storage.

Alternatively I could have just made a simple website for entering the expenses directly online while I'm out, but that opens up the matter of security. As it is the database is on a server in my office (secured by default). If I put it on the web I'd need to secure it. Where's the fun in that!?

By Mick Moignard

Two weeks ago, we looked at what was involved in creating production implementations from development builds. This week, we look at a tool that may just make the whole process run easier: Teamstudio's Build Manager.

In "Managing production Notes deployments," I described a lot of steps, which take time and effort to do and get right, and which often need to be done out of hours, which then adds to cost. This is where Teamstudio's Build Manager product comes in.

Build Manager is intended to provide their customers with something that enables Notes application changes to be pushed along a path from development to test and from test to production, with whatever nuances of environments that exist, and do it in a consistent and error-free manner. As we've seen, this isn't a trivial operation, and should not be perceived as such.

Now, I'm not going to do a traditional, detailed review of Build Manager here, for two reasons that are intertwined in each other. The first is that it's a complex piece of software that requires careful setup and configuration, as well as integration with your development process. That requires time, effort and several environments to do properly.

Secondly, whatever environment I had will be different to yours, which means that what works well for me may not be what you need. So what I did instead was talked to Teamstudio's Technical Director, Simon Peek, here in the UK about how Build Manager works and how you get the best from it.

Idea:
Im looking for more information of handling the start up time of the Notes 8 Standard Client. There a a few documentations about it, but i think this is not enough and mostly to complex to handle and understand for "normal users"  http://www.thenorth.com/apblog4.nsf/0/BB5DDB03611B2BB1852574D7005FF852
The default settings are very low and most of our users still have or will get newer hardware (with at least 2 GB RAM). So i know it depends on the RAM of hardware and other applications. But we have still users, which are not happy about the startup time of Notes 8.5 - FP1Standard Client.... I think we need more information about these settings

I still opened a APAR - but this is still pending

Idea:
For my understanding IBM looks to less on Notes Client Installation on a Terminal Server. We have about 10.000 users. And there local files (bookmark, names, autosave, desktop, etc.) are stored on a files server. Some users have bookmark or autosave files up to 100 MB each. It grows from R5 to R6 to R7 and now to R8.... My colleagues from the File Server team not happy about that, because we use quotas on the file server and in the worsest case the user can't start the notes client, because his file server drive is out of free space...

We have no option on the Client or Server side to compact these files within a good way. I now we can create batch files which are run on the weekend on the files server , but this is not the "normal way". I now most of the people say, local files are not supported on a file server. But with 8.5.1 it is  and this was said from a IBM - Lotus Expert !

Tags: IMAP winmail.dat tnef
Idea: TNEF is an MS-proprietary format. When an email comes in with a Winmail.dat attachment, the router is smart enough (as of 7.0.2) to on the fly convert it to a usable format.
The IMAP task isn't as smart (yet). If you're running Outlook as an IMAP client (don't ask), there are common situations where it'll post winmail.dat files to the IMAP server. This obviously causes issues with webmail and other clients accessing the mail file.
Please smarten up the IMAP server!

Idea: It's isn't really an issue here. But on the 'LotusKnows' jam there are several ideas which have a number of people demoting ideas but with no reasons given for Lotus. I'm sure this isn't unique, so in contexts such as the 'LotusKnows' jam is it worth requiring the demote option to be available only if a reason is specified?

I would like to be able to highlight a name in the text of an email or a business address (such as in a text email signature) and add that information easily to a new or existing contact.  For example, highlight

Mickey Mouse
1-800-123-4567
100 West Disney Way
Orlando, Fl 12345

and then right-click to add this information to contacts.  Or at the very least be able to copy the business address and paste into a single business address field instead of having to enter the street, city, zip all in separate fields (kind of like entering the first name and last name in a single field).

Tags: SSO between Domino & Websphere Portal
Idea:
I have my Websphere portal server set up for SSO with our Domino LDAP.  Everything worked fine until the department controlling the LDAP server started implementing "idle session timeout" for their server.  Once they did that, they were unable to import the LTPA token from my Websphere Application server because Websphere doesn't work with "idle session timeout".  Now our users can log into the portal with their Notes userid, but they are not logged into their webmail or sametime.  I have opened a PMR with IBM and their is an SPR for this matter, but IBM has closed the SPR thinking it's not worth fixing because we seem to be the only customers that want this functionality.  I'm wondering if this is true.  There must be some other customers out there that want users to log into the portal and see their mail, sametime and other Lotus products along with whatever other applications they have set up for their portal.  Please respond to this posting to let me, and more importantly, IBM know that these 2 products should work together.  Their solution is to set up a reverse proxy server.  How many servers do they expect us to have just to make their products more collaborative?

Idea:
When you open the Notes Client Preferences dialog and access the "Basic Notes Client Configuration" section there are numerous items in the "Additional Options" box.  The items may be in some functional order, but it would be much more useful (and easier to assist users) if they were simply presented in alphabetical order.

A system tray application that might be installed on a desktop machine which would notify me of incoming new messages and upcoming calendar entries (alarms) without having to have iNotes running within an open browser window.

When machine is restarted, notifier would auto connect to the mail server via HTTP if login details were previously specified.  Otherwise it would prompt for the password.

Gmail, Yahoo! Mail and Hotmail have such a notification utility.

Just like composite applications, allow me to specify that the border for a collapsible frame can by "Narrow" so that it does not consume as much real estate as the current version (~12 pixels)

Tags: embedded view
Idea:
When embedding a view on a form it is often difficult to decide upon the height.  It would be nice if I could have the view expand to the size needed to display the embedded data plus specify a maximum height.  It would also be great if I could allow the user of the form to resize the embedded view up/down for their viewing pleasure.
