POWER TOOLS 4.0 - GET THE MOST OUT OF NOTES AND DOMINO
Tap here to learn more about this set of 73 administrative utilities for Lotus Notes & Domino.

To my surprise Karen has been just as keen as I have to keep track of where "our money" (apparently, now we're married, everything that's mine is hers, as she loves to remind me) is going, using the Flex Accounts database I've been talking about.

Three months in (we started on 1st Jan this year) and we're both still entering everything we spend on a daily basis. I don't even need to remind her now.

We now have enough data to start seeing monthly trends and have already highlighted problem areas (namely the house) where we're overspending. That's by-the-by though. Fact is it's working but could be better.

To me a sign that an application is doing its job is when users ask for additions. Whenever I deliver an application and then never hear back I take this to mean it's take-up/use has been slow if any and take it as a sign of having failed at my job (OTT, I know). There's always the chance I got it spot on right first time, but, let's be fair, that's unlikely based on some of the specs I get sent ;o)

In this case the users are Karen and I, which is handy as it means I get to actually see the user using the app. There's no better way to see how you can improve something than watching (without speaking!) over a user's shoulder as they perform tasks. Watching Karen has highlighted lots of ways in which it can be improved.

Then there are the improvements and extra features I want. All in all there's lots to add. That's why, as I mentioned the other day, I'm dropping Domino as the backend to it.

Most of what I want to do (now that we've start collating the actual numeric data that is our incomings and outgoing) is number crunching and I'm sure you'll agree (?) Notes is not a good number cruncher!

As with everything on codestore I do it to show you guys how. In this case it was to demonstrate the use of Flex with Domino and I was learning as I went along. I feel I've done my job now - once I've made it ready for download you'll have a working CRUD-type app that shows Domino working with Flex. Whether the app itself is of use depends on your own personal circumstance.

Now I'm not saying Domino can't do what I want to do. It probably could, but it would be like, I dunno, turning up to do a lap of the Nürburgring in a tractor. I'd get round the course. Just very, very slowly. With this Accounts app it's like I've reached the starting line now and kind of realise it time to switch to something a little faster and more agile.

So I'm going to port it to LAMP. With a SQL backend finding out exactly what I want to know will be a doddle (and a handy learning experience too). I'll put another demo online when it's ready and we can take it from there. As always I assume you're interested in whatever I am.

Note: This is not an attempt to start a "flame war". It's just me saying Notes is not the only fruit!

With the recent release of Lotus Notes/Domino 8.5 comes three revamped iNotes interfaces. Learn about the different versions of iNotes and when they're most appropriate to deploy. Plus, get an overview of the competitive Web-based email landscape.

When I talked about accents recently somebody suggested I talk more about them. Ok then. Maybe it should be a regular feature, as it's something I've always been fascinated by. For starters, here's something that's had me thinking since:

Karen went to Nottingham Castle the other day with the kids and on leaving was asked by a "Polish" (term used to cover anybody from the Baltic States) couple if they were heading the right way for "down town".

This would have been a perfectly normal question in most other English-speaking countries - America for sure, Canada perhaps, and possibly Australia? In those countries, I believe, downtown is the inner city area. Such as "Downtown LA". In England is doesn't really mean anything.

At first I assumed that they'd learnt English (or picked some up) by watching American TV and that's why they thought we too must refer to the "town centre" as "down town". Then, when I though about it, another possibility occurred to me. Perhaps they'd actually picked up the much more local colloquialism whereby people might ask:

Where yer going?

And the answer might be:

Down town

In the same way the way the answer might well be:

Down pub

Or even:

Down shops

In either cases it actually means "I will be going (down) to the pub" or "I am about to go (down) to the shops". Although you might well also say "up shops". Why it's always down I don't know.

It struck me as a funny thing to ask though. I guess I'll never know where they actually got the saying from. Respect to them though for having the guts to (assuming they weren't just tourists) come to another country to work and learn the (often confusing) language. The hardest part of which must be getting your head round the odd things people say in different areas of the country, which you won't learn listening to a tape or watching a video.

Now I've got that thing where the word down, because I've just said it my head so many times doesn't seem like a real word. Do you ever get that? I once had a moment of insanity after way too much coding where I'd convinced myself "each" wasn't in fact a real world. I think I even searched Chambers online dictionary to check. Doh.

Tags: server future date correct
Idea:
I suppose every administrator knows about the problem. One false move and the date of the server is wrong, and consequently  the dates in many databases (also internal) are wrong. I think it won't be easy, but it would be very practical if there were an option to "turn back time" on a server.

Idea:
On error, produce a 'core dump' of all defined variables, objects, and a call trace.

The 'core dump' might provide a limited (one-level) listing of defined objects with their property values, and all local and global variable values.  Going down more than one level might end up with a huge amount of data but potentially there could be some provision for determining depth of trace.

It should also show the line where the error occurred.

An ordered trace of function calls would also be useful.

I've tried writing something to do this but got completely stuck trying to get a list of defined objects and variable names.

Idea:
One latent worry I've always had is that an obscure bug will one day surface in a mailout agent causing an infinite loop, or even a hacker finding a way to hijack application logic and pump out spam.

I would propose that the router have controls that allow the admin to set throttles, such as maximum messages per minute, maximum messages per user per day etc, with notification to Admin when throttling occurs.

Love the idea, see how it can be a win - win for everyone, it would help if there was some kind of statement as to how long the service will be free ( hopefully forever ), who owns the data ( a la Facebook ), is it officially a community effort or a Bluewave effort ( happy with either just needs to be clear ) etc.. etc..

This will send some ripples through the existing commercial schemes ( which is a good thing ) so setting out these basics will pay off longer term.

As the owner of a small notes / domino shop I would not be averse to contributing towards its running costs if it were a community effort. As an individual I would probably do the same on a voluntary basis. I would also be happy to contribute time. Sean
