Extricating Young Gussie

'America (в Америку)!'

Do not lose sight of the fact that all this was taking place on an empty stomach (не упустите из виду тот факт, что все это происходило на пустой желудок; to lose — терять, упускать; to take place — происходить: «брать место»), shortly after the rising of the lark (когда едва лишь проснулись: «вскоре после того как проснулись» жаворонки; to rise — вставать, подниматься; просыпаться).

'America!'

Do not lose sight of the fact that all this was taking place on an empty stomach, shortly after the rising of the lark.

'Yes, America (да, в Америку). I suppose even you have heard of America (полагаю, даже ты слышал про Америку)?'

'But why America (но почему Америка)?'

'Because that is where your Cousin Gussie is (потому что именно там находится твой двоюродный брат Гасси). He is in New York, and I can't get at him (он в Нью-Йорке, и я не могу до него добраться).'

'What's Gussie been doing (и что натворил: «cделал» Гасси)?'

'Gussie is making a perfect idiot of himself (Гасси изображает из себя законченного идиота = делает массу глупостей).'

'Yes, America. I suppose even you have heard of America?'

'But why America?'

'Because that is where your Cousin Gussie is. He is in New York, and I can't get at him.'

'What's Gussie been doing?'

'Gussie is making a perfect idiot of himself.'

To one who knew young Gussie as well as I did, the words opened up a wide field for speculation (для того, кто знал Гасси так же хорошо, как я, эти слова открывали целый спектр возможностей; field — поле; область; speculation — предположение, догадка).

'In what way (каким образом)?'

'He has lost his head over a creature (он потерял голову из-за юбки; to lose — терять; creature — создание, творение, существо).'

On past performances this rang true (судя по прошлому, это выглядело правдоподобно; performance — исполнение, выполнение; действие; поступок; поведение; to ring — звенеть; звучать; казаться, производить впечатление; true — правдивый, достоверный; to ring true — звучать искренне/правдоподобно). Ever since he arrived at man's estate Gussie had been losing his head over creatures (с тех самых пор, как Гасси достаточно подрос: «достиг статуса мужчины», он /постоянно/ терял голову из-за юбок; to arrive — достигать /какого-л. возраста/; man — мужчина; estate — поместье, имение; /уст./ состояние, положение). He's that sort of chap (такой уж он парень).

To one who knew young Gussie as well as I did, the words opened up a wide field for speculation.

'In what way?'

'He has lost his head over a creature.'

On past this rang true. Ever since he arrived at man's estate Gussie had been losing his head over creatures. He's that sort of chap.

But, as the creatures never seemed to lose their heads over him, it had never amounted to much (но поскольку юбки, похоже, никогда из-за него голову не теряли, из этого никогда ничего особенного не выходило; amount — величина, количество; to amount — равняться /чему-л./; быть равным; означать; much — /сущ./ многое; что-л., заслуживающее внимания, важное).

'I imagine you know perfectly well why Gussie went to America, Bertie (я полагаю, ты очень хорошо знаешь, почему Гасси уехал в Америку, Берти). You know how wickedly extravagant your Uncle Cuthbert was (ты знаешь, каким ужасающе экстравагантным был твой дядюшка Катберт; wicked — злой, злобный; безнравственный; плохой, отвратительный, мерзкий).'

But, as the creatures never seemed to lose their heads over him, it had never amounted to much.

'I imagine you know perfectly well why Gussie went to America, Bertie. You know how wickedly extravagant your Uncle Cuthbert was.'
