Сегодня нас ждет еще небольшая порция слов, а затем проверочная (самопроверочная) работа, потому что, естественно, я вас проверять не буду, это будет интересно только вам самим. Я вам дам несколько предложений, в которых встречаются ранее разученные слова. Итак, полный вперед!

ABSOLVE – прощать, освобождать, избавлять от ответственности

The father confessor absolved him his sins.

To absolve from a promise — освободить от обещания

He was absolved from all blame — с него были сняты все обвинения

To absolve from blame — прощать вину

ABSOLUTION – freedom from blame, guilt, sin, оправдание, прощение; освобождение (от ответственности, долгов, наказания), отпущение грехов, очищение

General absolution — публичное отпущение грехов

Absolution from sins — очищение от грехов / скверны

Once all the facts were known, the jury gave Angela absolution by giving a verdict of not guilty.

* * * Слова легко запомнить благодаря их взаимному и смысловому сходству и сходству со словом АБСОЛЮТНО – абсолютно чист, невинен и прощен. Ну а если и это не помогло запоминанию, то можно воспользоваться сходством с процессом СОЛЕНИЯ. Предствим себе людоеда, который поймал очередную жертву, ОБСОЛИЛ ее, ПРОСТИЛ ей все грехи и... Но не будем о грустном.

ABDUCT – to kidnap, take by force, похищать, насильно или обманом увозить.

The evildoers abducted the fairy princess from her happy home.

* * * Слово легко запомнить благодаря его сходству со словом duck – утка. Можно представить злобного грабителя, который похищает из пруда бедную добропорядочную утку.

ABRIDGE – to cut down, shorten, shortened, сокращать, уменьшать, ограничивать; урезывать (права, привилегии и т. п.), (of, from, in) лишать (чего-л.)

To abridge books — сокращать книги; делать в книгах купюры

This physics course is abridged — это сокращённый курс физики

To abridge a visit — сократить пребывание

To abridge smb.'s freedom — ограничивать чью-л. свободу

To abridge smb. of power — лишать кого-л. власти

Modern transportation abridges distance — современные виды транспорта сокращают расстояния

The publisher thought the dictionary was too long and abridged it.

* * * Здесь у меня сработала аналогия со словом BRIDGE. Представим себе, что кому-то мост показался слишлом длинным, и его УКОРОТИЛИ. Теперь висит над рекой ABRIDGED BRIDGE – пол-моста. Но толку от него...
