Доброго времени суток!

Сегодня я дам вам совсем небольшую порцию новых слов, но сначала - маленькую самопроверочную работу. Привожу несколько фрагментов со знакомыми и недавно разученными словами из книги А. Хэйли "Окончательный диагноз" (Arthur Hailey. The Final Diagnosis), который наряду с другими английскими текстами можно найти в библиотеке на сайте

- She scarcely heard him. “Mike, don’t wait! Please don’t wait!” She felt the contours of his body pressing madly, abandonedly, into her. She responded wildly, fought fiercely to bring him tighter, nearer, deeper.

- Momentarily Vivian found herself abandoning fear, as if whatever followed could not matter to her in the end because it was inevitable and would not be changed.

- She found herself wondering if this feeling were a form of depression, of abandoning hope.

Pearson paused again. What a superb actor the old man is, Seddons thought. What an unabashed, natural ham!

“Well, as a matter of fact...” Tomaselli paused; he sounded unusually diffident, as if weighing his words carefully.

- David Coleman had no intention of being intimidated. And if the old man wanted a showdown, he himself was quite willing to have it, here and now.

- About to continue talking, Dornberger checked himself abruptly. Something was wrong; he had a feeling of dizziness; his head was throbbing, the room swirling. Momentarily he closed his eyes, then opened them. It was all right; things were back in focus, the dizziness almost gone. But when he looked down at his hands he saw they were trembling. He tried to control the movement and failed.

- “Vivian,” Mike said, and she could see him trembling, “I’ve got to talk to you…”

А ТЕПЕРЬ НЕМНОГО НОВЫХ СЛОВ из наиболее встречающихся на экзамене GRE. Напомню, что заглавными буквами я даю синонимы, а вот аналогий для запоминания сегодня не даю, так как слова в основном знакомые или похожие на знакомые.

CAPRICE – whim, sudden, fancy;

The young girl's capricious tendencies made it difficult for her to focus on achieving her goals.

Queen Elizabeth I was quite capricious; her courtiers could never be sure which of their number would catch her fancy.
